About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Eaton Constantine – we’d packed the car to the brim with kids’ snacks, wellies, and enough board games to last a nuclear winter, only for the sat-nav to chuck us down a narrow lane that turned into a muddy quagmire just five miles shy of Shrewsbury. The wheels spun like nobody’s business, and there I was, elbow-deep in reversing manoeuvres while the little ones cheered like it was a rally. A friendly local in a Land Rover towed us out with a grin and a “You lot on holiday, then?”, which broke the ice nicely. By the time we rolled up, hearts racing with that mix of exhaustion and excitement, the first glimpse of the place had us all grinning like Cheshire cats.

It’s a tidy first-floor apartment in the heart of the village, perfect for a family dip into countryside calm without feeling too cut off. Stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug – smart open-plan kitchen and living space that screamed “make yourselves at home”, with an en-suite shower room that was a godsend after the road drama. The kids immediately claimed the Smart TV for CBeebies, while I eyed up the full-fitted kitchen, dreaming of fairy cakes and spag bol. First impressions? Spot on. We cracked open a picnic lunch on the private patio, the sun peeking through Shropshire clouds, and it was pure bliss.

The next few days melted into that glorious cottage life chaos we crave on holiday. Mornings kicked off with brekkie scrambles – me burning toast while the kids “helped” by scattering flour everywhere – then we’d pile into the car for gentle wanders along the nearby River Severn paths. It’s just a short hop to Buildwas, where the power station visitor centre had the boys mesmerised by all the whirring turbines and hands-on exhibits (who knew engineering could be such a hit?). Afternoons were for pottering around the village, picking up fresh eggs from a honesty box farm shop and letting the dog chase sticks in the meadows. Evenings? Alfresco dinners on the patio, giggling over Monopoly marathons, before the pièce de résistance: piling into the private hot tub. Nothing beats bubbling under the stars with pruned fingers and rosy cheeks, soothing away the day’s adventures while the kids splashed like mini porpoises.

Of course, there were those inevitable family hiccups – a lost welly in the undergrowth, or the time the youngest decided the hot tub was a bubble bath and dumped half a shampoo bottle in. But that’s the joy of it, isn’t it? In the quiet of Shropshire’s rolling hills, between Ironbridge’s gentle hum and Shrewsbury’s market buzz, you get these simple pleasures that make you pause. I caught myself one evening, hot tub steaming, kids finally dozing inside, thinking how these messy, laughter-filled moments are what recharge the batteries better than any spa. No grand plans, just us, unwinding in our little rural nook. If you’re after a relaxed family break that’s equal parts chaos and charm, this is the spot. We’re already plotting a return.
