About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Bishop’s Castle – we took a wrong turn somewhere near Shrewsbury, ending up on these narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline. The satnav was having a right old paddy, rerouting us every five minutes, and by the time we finally spotted the town’s twinkling lights, I was knackered but buzzing with that holiday anticipation. You know the feeling? That mix of ‘what if it’s rubbish?’ and ‘please let this be the perfect escape’.

Pulling up to our ground-floor apartment, right next to the owners’ place in these lovely 2.5 acres of grounds, my worries melted away. First impressions? Spot on. It’s this welcoming, family-friendly spot just a short stroll from the historic market town centre, with off-road parking that was a godsend after our detour drama. Stepping inside, the open-plan living area felt instantly cosy, and spotting the woodburning stove had us grinning like kids. Light, airy bedrooms – one with a balcony and en-suite – promised proper rest, and outside, the pretty lawned garden and that fabulous hot tub screamed relaxation.

We’d booked it for a proper do-nothing break, and boy, did we deliver. No grand plans, just lazy cottage days slowing right down. Mornings started with a stagger to the kitchen for tea and toast, then we’d flop into the garden chairs with books in hand. I devoured a battered paperback thriller while the sun filtered through the leaves, occasionally glancing up at the summerhouse like it was calling my name for a nap. Lunch was simple – cheese ploughman’s from the local shop, eaten alfresco on the lawn, with birdsong as our soundtrack.

Afternoons blurred into hot tub heaven. Slipping into those bubbling jets after zero effort felt indulgent, like we’d earned it without lifting a finger. We’d chat about nothing much, watch clouds drift, or just close our eyes and let the warmth seep in. One evening, as the stove crackled and we nursed mugs of hot chocolate, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and to-do lists – here, doing very little felt revolutionary. I caught myself smiling at how daft it is; we spend so long chasing ‘busy’ when this stillness is the real recharge.

Wandering into Bishop’s Castle for a gentle mooch – maybe a pint at the pub or picking up fresh scones – was as far as our adventures went. It’s all you need: a market town vibe without the hordes. Evenings wound down with firelit reading sessions, the balcony bedroom letting in that fresh Shropshire air. Light humour came from my other half’s failed attempt at ‘romantic’ hot tub selfies – blurry disasters that had us in stitches.

Honestly, it was pure joy in the art of bugger all. No regrets, just a heart full of slow days. If you fancy switching off properly, this is your spot.
