About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to our little Shropshire hideaway – we’d been buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, you know, the kind where you’ve got the crisps cracked open before you’ve even left the motorway. Me and Sarah, just the two of us for a proper unwind after months of kids’ school runs and work deadlines. But typical us, about 20 miles out, the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us down a single-track lane that looked more like a sheep’s personal runway. We ended up nose-to-nose with a farmer in a Land Rover, both of us reversing for what felt like ages while his collie gave us evils from the passenger seat. Laughed our heads off in the end, though – proper British countryside chaos to kick things off.

Finally rolling up, the place blew us away straight away. Tucked on the slopes of these rolling hills in the Tanat Valley, just a couple of miles from Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, it’s this spacious detached barn conversion right next to a working sheep farm. Private parking at the top, then a few steps down to the door, and you step into this galleried hall with a mezzanine balcony overlooking a massive refectory table – felt like we’d stumbled into our own posh farmhouse dream. The kitchen’s a belter too, all granite worktops and a huge island with breakfast bar stools, perfect for lazy mornings with coffee and toast.

We proper settled into that relaxed couple’s rhythm from the off. First morning, I’m faffing about trying to work the fancy coffee machine while Sarah sorts brekkie, and we end up with slightly burnt bacon – classic cottage life, innit? But who cares when you’ve got views out the window of lambs gambolling about and misty hills rolling off into the distance. We wandered down to Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant that first afternoon, just a short drive, and poked around the village hall for a bit of local gossip at the farm shop. Picked up some proper Shropshire cheese and fresh eggs – nothing beats cracking those into a scramble while the sun dips low.

Days blurred into this blissful routine of simple pleasures. We’d hike up the farm tracks – with the owners’ permission, of course – spotting buzzards wheeling overhead and wildflowers everywhere. One evening, we packed a picnic and found a quiet spot by the River Tanat, just nattering about nothing and everything, feet in the cool water. Back at the barn, we’d crack open a bottle of wine at that island bar, cooking up pasta with whatever we’d foraged from the veg patch nearby. There was this hilarious moment when a cheeky sheep poked its head over the fence during dinner, eyeing our plates like it was invited – had us in stitches, shooing it off with tea towels.

Sitting there one night on the balcony, stars popping out over Glan Hafon, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life’s mad rush feels miles away here; it’s the little things, isn’t it? The shared giggles over burnt toast, the quiet walks hand-in-hand, no phones pinging. We didn’t need grand adventures – just this peaceful pocket of Shropshire, farm rhythms and each other. Left feeling recharged, already plotting our next escape. If you’re after that cosy couple’s break with a side of countryside charm, you won’t go wrong round these parts.
