About Shropshire
I finally made it to Shropshire after what felt like the scenic route from hell – well, not hell, but definitely a detour involving a cheeky sat-nav glitch that had me looping around a muddy farm track near Church Stretton. Picture this: me, cursing under my breath (politely, of course), with the windscreen wipers battling a sudden downpour, wondering if I'd ever find the place. But as I crested the hill, there it was – this gorgeous, rambling farmhouse nestled in the hills near Craven Arms, all cosy and inviting with its classic Shropshire charm. My heart lifted instantly; the anticipation of a proper getaway bubbled up, and those first impressions? Spot on. It screamed "kick back and recharge."

We'd booked it for the walking – Shropshire's got some of the best hikes in the country, right on the doorstep. First morning, the sun was out, painting the landscape gold. We laced up our boots and headed straight for the Long Mynd, just a short drive away. That initial climb up the batch was pure joy – heather buzzing with bees, views stretching over to the Stiperstones, and not a soul in sight. We picnicked by a tinkling stream, feeling like proper explorers. I even managed a dramatic pose on a rock, pretending I was summiting Everest. Laughable, really, given my fitness level.

But oh, British weather – it's got a wicked sense of humour. By afternoon, the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, turning our gentle stroll into a slippery scramble. We pushed on along the towpath by the River Onny, dodging puddles the size of small lakes, but the rain lashed down so hard we ended up sheltering under a gnarly old tree, laughing at our soggy selves. "This is character-building," I declared, while secretly plotting a hot tea back at the farmhouse. It was a right old adventure, though – the kind that makes you appreciate the wood-burning stove waiting at home base.

Next day, proper foul weather hit: horizontal rain and a wind that could peel paint. Plans for the Shropshire Way got shelved; instead, we improvised with a low-level loop around the local lanes and meadows near the farm. Mud up to our knees, waterproofs failing spectacularly, but there was magic in it. We spotted deer darting through the mist and wild ponies grazing stoically. It forced us to slow down, chat properly, and notice the little things – like how the rain makes the hills smell alive.

Looking back, that mishap on the drive set the tone: holidays aren't about perfection, are they? They're about rolling with the weather's whims, getting a bit drenched, and coming home with stories. Shropshire's walks delivered every time, rain or shine, and that farmhouse was the perfect pit stop. If you're after a proper reset, pack your wellies and go – just double-check your sat-nav first.
