About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Shropshire last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it knew better than the winding lanes. We’d set off from the Midlands full of beans, dreaming of proper downtime, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a rogue flock of sheep decided to stage a sit-in right across the road near Oswestry. There I was, honking gently (no point upsetting the farmer), while the kids in the back started a chorus of “Baa Baa Black Sheep” that went on for what felt like hours. Classic British countryside chaos, but we laughed it off, and by the time we arrived, that little mishap had us even more ready to unwind.

Pulling up to the cottage, my heart did a little flip of anticipation – you know that buzz when you spot the place you’ve been fancying for weeks? First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those cosy semi-detached farm cottages, all charm and welcome, tucked away in a peaceful rural spot just outside Oswestry. The garden stretched out like an invitation to do absolutely nothing, which was music to my ears after the sheep escapade.

From that moment, the holiday became a masterclass in faffing about gloriously. No grand plans, no ticking off lists of must-sees – just the sheer joy of slowing right down. Mornings kicked off with a brew on the patio, watching the birds flit about the garden borders while the mist lifted off the fields. I’d flop into one of the loungers with a dog-eared paperback – I devoured two thrillers and a rom-com that week, losing hours without a care. The kids mooched around too, building dens under the apple tree or just kicking a ball lazily across the lawn, their usual city energy melting away.

Afternoons were for proper lounging. We’d fire up the barbecue for a simple lunch – sausages from the local butcher in Oswestry, nothing fancy – then retreat to the shaded spots with cold drinks. I remember one golden afternoon sprawled on a blanket, dozing to the hum of bees and distant sheep (no hard feelings there). It was blissfully uneventful, the kind of day where time stretches out like warm toffee. Evenings meant board games inside by the fire, or just staring out at the sunset painting the Shropshire hills in pinks and oranges. The garden felt like our private kingdom – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, that perfect mix of tidy and untamed.

Looking back, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection one evening, nursing a cuppa as the stars popped out. Life’s always rushing us, isn’t it? Work emails, school runs, the endless scroll. But there, in that little corner of Shropshire, doing very little felt like the most productive thing imaginable. It recharged my batteries like nothing else – no jet lag, no drama, just pure, unhurried peace. If you’re craving a break from the grind, find yourself a spot like this. Trust me, the sheep might test you on the way, but the rewards are worth every bleat.
