About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Shropshire last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it knew best, and my other half navigating with a map app that kept losing signal. We’d planned a cosy break at this charming little holiday cottage just outside Shrewsbury, the sort with a welcoming vibe and all the comforts for a proper unwind. But about 20 minutes from our turning, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with the bonnet, sending us into a flap (pun very much intended). Heart in mouth, we pulled over, checked for feathers (none, thank goodness), and laughed it off with a thermos of tea. That minor hitch only built the anticipation – by the time we trundled up the lane, I was buzzing to explore.

First impressions? Spot on. The cottage nestled quietly in its own pocket of countryside, with a garden that begged for morning coffee and evenings with a GandT. It felt like slipping into someone’s favourite armchair – lived-in, peaceful, perfect for forgetting the daily grind. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local cider, and set off for a wander, no itinerary in hand. That’s when the magic of getting lost kicked in.

Shropshire’s got this knack for hiding gems if you veer off the main drags, and we stumbled on them by accident. First up, a meandering footpath from the cottage led us to a tucked-away picnic spot by the River Severn, barely a couple of miles off. No crowds, just the gentle burble of water, herons fishing, and a bench that seemed planted there for us. We munched pasties from a nearby farm shop, watching narrowboats chug by. Pure bliss, and zero tourists in sight.

Next day, fancying a proper ramble, we took a wrong turn on a bridleway and ended up at this forgotten little nature reserve – think wildflower meadows and ancient hedgerows buzzing with butterflies. I’d no idea it was there; the Ordnance Survey map on my phone had glitched, but who cares? We spotted a family of deer and spent hours just pottering, picking blackberries for a crumble later. It made me reflect a bit – back home, I’m always rushing, apps dictating every step. Out here, losing the path forced us to breathe, notice the little things. Felt like a gentle nudge from the universe: slow down, you daft sod.

Our best accidental find? A hidden pub down a single-track lane, the kind with wonky floors and ale that tastes of the hills. We’d aimed for Shrewsbury centre but got sidetracked by a faded signpost, and blimey, what a score. Locals swapping stories, pork scratchings on the bar, and a ploughman’s that hit the spot. No chain nonsense, just proper Shropshire warmth.

By the end of the week, we’d mapped our own mental atlas of these off-piste treasures – all within spitting distance, no need for far-flung jaunts. Packing up, I felt that rare holiday glow: recharged, a tad wiser, and already plotting the next lost adventure. If you’re after a Shropshire escape that rewards the wanderer, grab a cottage like ours and let the lanes lead you astray. You won’t regret it.
