About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to our little Shropshire hideaway – we’d been buzzing with excitement all morning, dreaming of cosy nights in after a week of proper graft back home. Me and Sarah, just the two of us for a rare couple’s getaway, packed the car with enough cheese, wine and crisps to see us through a siege. But about 20 minutes from the turning, disaster struck: the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping down a muddy farm track that looked like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. We were sliding about like Bambi on ice, laughing our heads off as I reversed into a hedge. “This is it,” Sarah said, “our holiday’s cursed already!” But we made it out, dusted ourselves down, and arrived just as the sun dipped behind the hills, hearts racing with that proper anticipation.

Pulling up to the cottage, we were smitten straight away. Tucked in this gorgeous unspoilt valley, surrounded by those rolling Shropshire Hills, it had a shop and pub practically on the doorstep – talk about convenient. It’s the sort of place that wraps you up like a warm hug: a vibrant red front door swings open into a sitting room that instantly lifts the spirits, with quirky bits and bobs everywhere, plush red armchairs against soft ivory walls, and a vibe that screams “kick off your shoes and stay a while.” Perfect for us lovebirds. The kitchen’s a treat too – all shiny white tiles and modern touches, with a dining spot big enough for a couple of mates if we fancied company, though we didn’t.

We wasted no time settling in. First evening, we nipped to the pub for a pint of local ale and some pie that was pure heaven – none of your fancy gastropub nonsense, just proper, hearty grub. Back at the cottage, we rustled up a feast in that gleaming kitchen: pasta with heaps of veg from the shop, a bottle of red, and candles flickering away. Simple pleasures, eh? Next day, we wandered up into the Stiperstones – those wild, rocky hills right on our patch. The air was crisp, the views endless, and we huffed and puffed up a gentle path, holding hands like newlyweds. Found a spot for a picnic, watching buzzards circle overhead. Bliss.

Of course, cottage life isn’t all Instagram-perfect. The second morning, I knocked over the cafetière mid-brew, sending coffee grounds flying like confetti at a wedding. Sarah caught me swearing under my breath (well, almost) and we ended up giggling on the floor, covered in sludge. That’s the chaos I love about these breaks – it strips away the daily grind, reminds you life’s too short not to laugh at your own daftness. We pottered about the valley paths, popped into the shop for milk and papers, even tried our hand at a bit of birdwatching from the lounge window. Evenings were for curling up with a book or a film, her feet in my lap, rain pattering outside.

Reflecting on it now, as we packed up on the last day, I realised how much we needed this. No kids, no deadlines, just us and the rhythm of rural Shropshire. It’s funny – you go away thinking you want adventure, but sometimes the best bit is the quiet joy of shared cups of tea and daft mishaps. We’re already plotting our return. If you’re after a relaxed escape, this neck of the woods delivers in spades.
