About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to that luxury detached cottage in Westhope, Shropshire – it was meant to be a smooth jaunt down the A49, but oh no, not for us. We’d piled into the car with enough luggage for a month (why do we always overpack?), kids bickering in the back, and me navigating via a phone that decided to lose signal just as we hit those twisty lanes near Craven Arms. Then came the mishap: a wrong turn onto a narrow farm track, bumping along with hedges scraping the sides like we were in a dodgy episode of The Dukes of Hazzard. Heart in mouth, I reversed out – thank goodness for reversing cameras – and finally spotted the village sign. By the time we pulled up, we were all a bit frazzled, but anticipation bubbled up as we glimpsed the inviting exterior.

Stepping inside was like a warm hug after the chaos. The spacious kitchen hit us first, all stylish and modern with everything you’d need to rustle up a feast for our big group – I was already dreaming of bacon butties. It flowed straight into a homely dining area with a grand table perfect for lazy breakfasts, and a woodburner that promised cosy evenings. We dumped the bags and wandered into the massive sitting room – blimey, those bi-fold doors opening onto the garden made it feel like the countryside was part of the furniture. Plonking down on the comfy sofas, flipping on the 50-inch Smart TV, and sinking into the underfloor heating, we all let out a collective sigh. First impressions? Spot on. Downstairs, there’s even a bright double bedroom with an en-suite and a slick wet room – ideal if anyone’s knackered from the drive.

Upstairs, four cracking bedrooms waited, each with charming decor, comfy beds, and views that had us glued to the windows, staring at the rolling Shropshire hills. It’s the sort of place that feels grand yet dead welcoming, perfect for family and mates. But the real showstopper? That sensational garden. Landscaped to perfection with posh outdoor furniture and a bubbling hot tub, it was calling our names before we’d even unpacked. There’s a neat little studio tucked away too, like a private retreat for anyone needing a breather – genius for bigger groups.

We didn’t stray far that first day; after the arrival palaver, we just cracked open some tins, fired up the barbie, and watched the sun dip over the fields. A gentle wander into Westhope itself revealed a proper quaint village pub, The Bailey Head in nearby Craven Arms doing a decent pint and pie – close enough for a cheeky evening stroll. Reflecting on it now, that messy journey was a right laugh in hindsight; it made arriving feel like winning the lottery. Shropshire’s countryside works its magic from the doorstep here – no need to venture miles when paradise is in your garden. If you’re after a spot that blends luxury with that proper homey vibe, this is it. We’re already plotting a return, minus the sat-nav drama.
