About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Shropshire last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and my other half navigating with a map app that decided to throw a wobbly just as we hit the winding lanes near Craven Arms. We ended up looping round a muddy farm track for a good ten minutes, me muttering about “why didn’t we just stick to the A roads?”, but honestly, it was the perfect comedy start to our getaway. By the time we pulled into the courtyard of this cracking 19th-century barn conversion tucked away on 250 acres of farmland in the Hope Valley, we were giggling about it and already buzzing with that holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine sinking into a chair with a cuppa and not moving for days.

First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those Westhope cottages that just wraps you up in cosiness from the off – think welcoming sitting room with squashy sofas begging for a Netflix binge, and a dining table for four that screams lazy family suppers or romantic noshes. There’s a luxury bathroom that had us both cooing, plus shared access to a games room and gym, though we barely glanced at those. The whole place blends that rustic charm with proper modern comforts, right in this stunning pocket of Shropshire countryside.

But let’s be honest, the real joy was doing sod all. After that faff on the journey, we vowed to switch off completely, and this spot was made for it. Mornings kicked off with brews on the patio, watching mist lift off the fields while the cows mooched about in the distance – no rush, no plans. I’d crack open a dog-eared paperback (I’m on a Philippa Gregory kick at the mo), feet up on a garden chair, while we took turns fiddling with the barbecue for simple lunches – sausages from the local butcher in Craven Arms, nothing fancy. Afternoons melted into dozing in the sun-dappled garden, that gentle breeze rustling the hedges, with birdsong for a soundtrack. It was pure bliss, the kind of slowing down you forget you need until you’re knee-deep in it.

One evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, I caught myself staring out the window, mug in hand, and had a proper moment of reflection. Back home, I’m always chasing the next deadline or errand, but here? It hit me how restorative it is to just be – no scrolling, no schedules, just the quiet rhythm of rural life. We wandered the farmland paths at a snail’s pace, spotting butterflies and picking blackberries for crumble, but mostly we lounged, chatted rubbish, and let the days unfold. Evenings were telly and takeaways from the village pub, sprawled on those sofas till we nodded off.

By the time we packed up, I was plotting our return. Shropshire’s Hope Valley works its magic on you like that – a gentle nudge to savour the simple stuff. If you’re after a holiday that’s all about recharging with zero guilt, find yourself a spot like this and embrace the art of bugger all. It’s ruddy marvellous.
