About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to our Shropshire getaway last autumn – the leaves were turning that glorious coppery gold, carpeting the lanes like nature’s own welcome mat. We’d piled into the car from Birmingham, me navigating with my trusty phone, husband at the wheel, and the kids buzzing in the back. About halfway, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with our Mondeo, forcing an emergency stop that sent crisps flying everywhere. Cue much laughter and a quick tidy-up, but it set the tone – this was proper countryside, alive with the unpredictability of the season.

By the time we trundled into the Hope Valley, the anticipation was palpable. Dusk was creeping in, the air crisp with that unmistakable autumn bite, mist rolling gently over the farmland. Spotting the property – a beautifully converted 19th-century barn nestled in 250 acres of peaceful Shropshire fields, proudly awarded Sykes Gem Awards 2025 Bronze for Best Longstanding Property – we were smitten straight away. It blended original character with modern comforts so seamlessly: en-suite rooms for everyone, shared games room and gym to burn off energy, and a lovely patio garden with a hot tub overlooking those rolling views. First impressions? Spot on. As we unpacked, the fading light painted everything in soft amber hues, and the wood-burning stove was already crackling, chasing away the chill.

Autumn shaped every moment of our stay, turning it into pure magic. Mornings started with frosty walks straight from the door, crunching through fallen leaves across the farmland, the kids collecting conkers like treasure hunters. We’d head to nearby Craven Arms for a mooch – the village pub did a cracking Sunday roast with seasonal veg straight from local fields, all golden roast potatoes and bramley apple crumble that screamed harvest time. One afternoon, we drove just a couple of miles to Stokesay Castle, its medieval towers wreathed in ivy turning fiery red, evoking some proper time-travel vibes. The season’s mellow light made the whole place feel like a painting, and we wandered the battlements giggling at our daft ghost stories.

Evenings were the highlight, though. Sinking into the hot tub as the sun dipped, steam rising into the cool air, stars popping out one by one – it was bliss. We’d fire up the games room for a bit of ping-pong (I’m rubbish, but enthusiastic), then huddle round the stove with board games and mulled cider. The farmland views from the patio, with deer silhouetted against the harvest moon, felt like our own private idyll.

Looking back, that little mishap on the road was a gift – it reminded me to slow down and savour these moments. In the rush of daily life, we forget how a seasonal escape like this recharges the soul. Shropshire in autumn? It’s not just a holiday; it’s a love letter to slowing down, wrapped in nature’s finest foliage. We’re already plotting a return for next year’s golden hour.
