About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot near Oswestry in Shropshire – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M54 turned into a comedy of errors. We’d set off full of beans, me navigating on my phone while my mate Dave drove, both buzzing about escaping the daily grind for a few days in the Shropshire Hills. But then the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis, rerouting us down a narrow lane that was more pothole than road. We bottomed out twice, swearing under our breath (well, I did anyway), and just when we thought we’d cracked it, a cheeky sheep wandered out in front of us, staring us down like we were the intruders. Dave slammed on the brakes, spilling his flask of tea all over the dash. Laugh? We were in stitches by the time we finally spotted the place, hearts racing but grinning like idiots.

Pulling up, though, all that arrival chaos melted away. The property was this cosy detached cottage, all welcoming with its pitched roof and flower tubs bursting with late-summer colour – proper picture-postcard stuff. First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled out of the car, still wiping tea from our laps, and there it was: a private hot tub bubbling away on the deck like it was waiting just for us, with views stretching out over rolling green fields towards the Welsh border hills. You could practically feel the stress ebbing away. Inside, it was just as inviting – a snug lounge with a wood burner ready for cosier evenings, and a kitchen kitted out enough to rustle up a decent fry-up without faffing about.

We wasted no time cracking on with the hot tub, slipping in with a couple of cold ones from the local offy, watching the sun dip behind the hills. Oswestry’s only a short hop away, so we nipped into town that first evening for fish and chips from a proper no-frills chippy – crispy batter, mushy peas, the works. Sat on a bench in the market square, munching away, it hit me: this was exactly what we needed. No neon lights or crowds, just that gentle Shropshire quiet, broken only by the odd tractor rumbling past.

Next morning, we wandered down to a nearby woodland trail – nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for lunch back at the cottage. Spotted a few red kites soaring overhead, which felt like a proper treat. There was this moment, lounging on the patio with a cuppa, where I caught myself reflecting: how often do we bolt through life without pausing? Here, miles from the motorway madness, it was like the world slowed down. Dave teased me for getting all philosophical, but even he admitted it was the perfect reset.

By the end of the stay, that bumpy arrival was the best story – turned what could’ve been a faff into the highlight. If you’re after a peaceful Shropshire bolthole with hot tub bliss and easy access to Oswestry’s charms, this corner’s a gem. We’re already plotting a return, minus the satnav drama.
