About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot in Shropshire – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M54 turned into a right faff. Sat-nav had us twisting down narrow lanes that got narrower by the minute, and just as we were convinced we’d end up in someone’s back field, the low-fuel light pinged on. Cue mild panic: me swearing under my breath (well, almost), the kids in the back chanting “are we there yet?” like a broken record, and my other half frantically googling the nearest petrol station on her phone. Turned out it was miles back, so we nursed the car along, hearts in mouths, finally spotting a tiny garage in Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant just in time. Topped up, rattled on, and suddenly there it was – this cracking barn conversion tucked on the outskirts, all promising views over open countryside. We’d been buzzing about it for weeks, imagining lazy evenings ahead, and pulling up, I have to say, it didn’t disappoint one bit.

The spacious driveway was a godsend after that white-knuckle drive, gravel crunching under the tyres as we piled out, stretching our legs on the lush lawns surrounding the place. A few steps up to the private decking, and blimey, there was this cracking setup with alfresco dining seats and a hot tub that looked proper inviting – I could already picture us bubbling away under the stars later, pints in hand. Nipped round the back for a peek at the enclosed garden, dead private and peaceful, perfect for the dogs to have a sniff about without causing havoc. First impressions? Spot on. It’s got that stylish vibe, blending old-school character with modern touches that make it feel dead cosy without being fussy.

Inside, we dumped the bags and flopped onto the plush corner sofa in the open-plan living space – Smart TV on the wall, woodburning stove ready to roar (we chucked a log on straight away, naturally). It’s the sort of setup that screams “relax” after our arrival circus. We cracked open a brew, admired the views, and the kids were straight out exploring the garden, while I had a proper moment sat there thinking, “You know what, we needed this.” Work’s been mad, life’s a whirl, and turning up in a flap like that made me realise how daft it is to let the little stresses overshadow the good stuff. Shropshire’s got this gentle magic about it – tranquil, unpretentious.

That first afternoon, we wandered the mile-and-a-bit into Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, grabbed pasties from the local shop, and mooched round the village green, chatting to a couple of locals who reckoned the nearby walks up to Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall were unmissable (we’re saving that for tomorrow). Back for a hot tub dip as the sun dipped – pure bliss, steam rising, countryside stretching out. Dinner was a lazy barbecue on the decking, everyone knackered but chuffed. If you’re after a proper unwind with family or mates, this neck of Shropshire delivers. Mishaps and all, it’s already one of those trips you don’t want to end.
