About Scarborough
I’ll never forget the drive up to Scarborough – we’d packed the car to the brim with kids’ beach toys, snacks, and enough crisps to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a massive tailback just past York. Typical, eh? The little ones were getting restless, chanting “are we there yet?” like it was a football chant, and I was sweating bullets trying to keep the peace with promises of ice cream. But as we finally crested the hill and caught that first glimpse of the sea sparkling under the sun, all the faff melted away. Scarborough’s coastline has this magical pull, doesn’t it? We were buzzing with anticipation, windows down, singing along to some dodgy pop playlist.

Pulling up to our spot along the quay, we were gobsmacked by the views – the harbour bobbing with fishing boats and the endless North Sea stretching out like a promise of lazy days. It’s a cracking first-floor apartment, all open-plan and cosy, right in the heart of things near the beach, chip shops, and that brilliant pub down the road where they pull a decent pint. Stepping inside felt like coming home; the living space is massive, with a kitchen kitted out for rustling up bacon butties or a proper roast, a dining table for four (perfect for our crew), and a sitting area with an electric fire that glowed like a hug after a chilly walk.

The first evening was pure bliss. We wandered down to South Sands, just a stone’s throw away, paddling in the waves while the kids built wonky sandcastles that promptly got flattened by the tide. Laughter everywhere, sandy toes trailing back for fish and chips wrapped in newspaper – none of your fancy restaurant malarkey, just proper seaside grub scoffed on the balcony watching the sun dip behind the cliffs. That first impression? Spot on. It was like the place was made for unwinding.

Next day, we hit the beach proper, lugging the windbreak and buckets. Scarborough’s sands are epic for families – wide, golden, and alive with donkey rides and ice cream vans tinkling away. The chaos kicked in when our youngest decided to bury his brother up to the neck in sand; cue panicked digging and muffled giggles. Cottage life at its finest – simple joys mixed with that joyful pandemonium. Afternoons were for ambling along the harbour, spotting seals popping up like cheeky locals, then back for tea in the kitchen. I even managed a solo mooch to the Italian Gardens nearby, sipping coffee and pretending I was cultured amid the flowerbeds.

Evenings blurred into board games by the fire, with the pub’s live music drifting up faintly. One night, as I watched the family sprawled out, knackered and happy, I had a proper moment – you know, that quiet realisation that these messy, brilliant holidays are what it’s all about. Not the Instagram-perfect stuff, but the real deal: sea air in your lungs, full bellies, and memories that stick. Scarborough nailed it for us – we’re already plotting a return. If you’re after a relaxed family escape, this is your spot.
