About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after what felt like the world's most reluctant road trip. I'd set off from Leeds full of beans, dreaming of crashing waves and chippy teas, but about halfway there, my sat-nav decided to throw a proper wobbly and rerouted me down some winding B-road that had me white-knuckling the wheel past endless sheep. A classic me move—overpacking the car with books and snacks, then panicking when the signal drops. Still, by the time I pulled into the secure parking spot outside the apartment block, complete with its handy EV charger (which I didn't need but eyed enviously), the sun was dipping low over the sea, and my heart did a little flip. What a first impression: the North Sea stretching out like a promise, the castle ruins perched dramatically on the headland, and the beach just a hop away.

It's a cracking second-floor apartment, all stylish and welcoming, with a lift if you're feeling lazy (which I was). Stepping into that open-plan living space felt like sinking into a hug—everything you need right there, no faffing about. The views? Blimey, they stole the show. From the big windows, you could gaze out at the coastline curling away, the sea sparkling under the sun, and the castle keeping its ancient watch. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window to let in that salty breeze, and thought, right, this is it—no plans, no rush, just proper slowing down.

And slow down I did. Scarborough's got its bustle—the beach crowds, Peasholm Park's little lake with the paddle boats, the promenade alive with families licking ice creams—but I barely scratched the surface. My days blurred into this glorious haze of doing sod all, and it was bliss. Mornings kicked off with a brew on the balcony (or peering out the window if it was drizzly, which it was half the time), watching fishing boats bob about. Then it'd be straight into pyjamas for a lazy sprawl on the sofa, feet up, lost in a dog-eared paperback. I'd brought three novels, figuring I'd smash them, but ended up rereading the same comforting pages, chuckling at the same jokes.

The garden area's a gem too—nothing fancy, but a quiet little spot tucked away for when you fancy fresh air without the full beach onslaught. I'd wander down with a cuppa, flop into a chair amid the flowers, and just... be. No scrolling, no to-do lists. One afternoon, a squirrel dashed across, and I spent a solid half-hour willing it to come back for nuts I didn't have. Dead glamorous, I know. Lunch was whatever was in the fridge—simple sarnies or a bowl of local crab from the nearby market—eaten slow, savouring the sea view like it was a private show.

Looking back, that gentle rhythm was the real magic. Usual me would've legged it to every attraction, ticking boxes till I was knackered. But here, with the waves whispering and the castle standing sentinel, I let go. A bit of self-reflection over a GandT one evening: life's too short for constant hustle; sometimes the best holiday is the one where you achieve precisely nowt but feel utterly recharged. Scarborough worked its spell—I left fatter, happier, and already plotting a return for more of the same.
