About Scarborough
I’ll never forget the drive up to Scarborough – what should’ve been a straightforward two-hour jaunt from Leeds turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down some winding B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, just as we hit the outskirts, a sudden downpour hit, turning the windscreen into a blurry mess and me into a swearing-at-the-wipers amateur. By the time we pulled up outside our ground-floor apartment, right in the thick of things near the seafront, we were both knackered, damp, and desperately in need of a cuppa. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all morning, picturing us strolling straight onto the beach, fish and chips in hand, but reality? More like scrambling out of the car like drowned rats, arms full of bags that kept slipping in the rain.

Still, the moment we stepped inside, all that chaos melted away. It’s this cosy little open-plan spot, perfect for just the two of us – kitchen, dining nook, and sitting area all flowing together like they were made for lazy holiday unwinding. First impressions? Bloody brilliant, actually. The place felt like a warm hug after the drive from hell; everything was spotless and inviting, with that just-right seaside vibe without any fuss. We dumped our bags, flicked on the kettle (induction hob whirring away nicely), and within minutes, we were perched at the table with mugs of tea, staring out at the street buzzing with holidaymakers heading to the beach. The location’s a dream – you’re literally moments from the shoreline, with chip shops, cafes, and those classic arcade lights winking in the distance. No faffing about with buses or long walks; it’s all right there.

That first afternoon, we shook off the travel gremlins with a proper mooch around. Nipped down to the South Bay beach, paddled in the chilly North Sea (bracing doesn’t even cover it – I yelped like a kid), and grabbed battered sausage and chips from a no-nonsense stall that’s probably been frying since I was in nappies. Laughed our heads off watching families building wonky sandcastles, and I even had a go on the donkey rides – felt a right plonker at 35, but it was pure nostalgia. Back at the flat, we rustled up a simple pasta on the hob (microwave for the sauce, genius), then flopped on the sofa with a bottle of wine, windows cracked open to let in the salty air and faint sound of the funfair.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker – made the rest of the stay feel like we’d earned it. Taught me something, really: holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but rolling with the punches and letting places like this wrap you up cosy. Scarborough’s got that unpretentious charm – chippy smells, seagull squawks, and all – and this little retreat nailed it. Can’t wait to go back, minus the sat nav sabotage next time.
