About Scarborough
I’ll never forget the drive up to Scarborough – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, beach toys, and enough crisps to siege a castle, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just outside Whitby. It rerouted us down some narrow lane that had me white-knuckling the wheel, convinced we’d end up in a field with the dog barking at sheep. But hey, that’s the joy of a proper British road trip, innit? A bit of chaos to build the anticipation. By the time we crested the hill and spotted the sea glinting in the distance, the kids were bouncing like they’d mainlined Ribena, and I was already dreaming of chip suppers.

Pulling up to our ground-floor flat right in the thick of it all felt like striking gold. It’s one of those traditional Regency-style spots, dead central, just a cheeky five-minute wander from the beach and the cluster of shops and pubs that make Scarborough hum. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside was like slipping into a cosy hug – thoughtfully laid out, with a massive king-size bed in the bedroom that had me and the missus grinning like idiots after wrestling the kids into their PJs. The bathroom’s a proper treat too, with a bath and shower combo that promised long soaks after sandy escapades. And the best bit? They let us bring the dog, Alfie, who immediately claimed the rug as his throne.

We settled in quick, cracking open a brew and letting the sea air waft through the windows. Scarborough’s got that perfect family vibe – no need for grand plans, just simple pleasures. Mornings kicked off with a stroll along the South Bay beach, paddling in the shallows while the little ones built wonky sandcastles that inevitably toppled into the tide. Lunch was fish and chips from a no-frills spot on the harbour, wrapped in paper and scoffed on the promenade with seagulls eyeing us up like opportunists. Afternoons? We wandered the Italian Gardens – those lush terraces up near the Spa – where the kids ran wild chasing each other, and I pretended to be all zen, gazing out at the cliffs.

Evenings brought the cottage life chaos we love: Alfie stealing sausages off plates during a homemade curry (takeaway, obviously – who cooks on hols?), board games that descended into giggles and mild arguments over Monopoly hotels. One night, we hit a cosy pub just round the corner for a pint and some live folk music – nothing fancy, but the kind of place where locals chat like old mates. I had a quiet moment of self-reflection sat there, watching the family knackered but happy, thinking how these daft, relaxed breaks are what recharge the batteries better than any spa.

Scarborough delivered on every front – no frills, all heart. That flat was our homely hub, steps from the action but private enough for proper downtime. If you’re after a chilled family escape with a splash of seaside mischief, it’s hard to beat. We’re already plotting a return – sat-nav glitches and all.
