About Scarborough
I’ll never forget the drive up to Scarborough – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Whitby, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a narrow lane that was more pothole than road. We ended up bouncing along like we were in a rally car, laughing our heads off as mud splattered the windows. But as we crested the hill into Scarborough, the clouds parted just enough to tease a glimpse of the sea, and my heart did a little flip. I was buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know, imagining fish and chips on the beach and endless cups of tea with a view.

Pulling up to our third-floor luxury apartment in a sleek new building, we were gobsmacked by the views straight over South Bay – the sea sparkling like it was showing off just for us. It felt like the perfect perch for a cosy getaway, dead central but with that Yorkshire coastline right on the doorstep, beach half a mile away and town centre not much farther. We dumped our bags in the welcoming hallway, kicked off the wellies, and peeked into the massive bedroom with its super-king wool bed – pure bliss after that drive.

First morning, we wandered down to the beach, and that’s where we met Madge, the quintessential Scarborough character selling buckets and spades from a rickety stall. She must’ve been in her seventies, with a fag dangling from her lip and a laugh like a foghorn. “Youse lot look like you’ve escaped the rat race!” she cackled, eyeing our city coats. I confessed we were just after some proper sea air, and she launched into a tale about the time she chased off a seagull that nicked her sandwich – mid-air, with her umbrella. We bought three buckets we didn’t need, just to hear more. “Locals like me keep this place real,” she winked. “Don’t let the tourists ruin it!”

Later, strolling towards the town centre, we bumped into Derek outside a chippy – a wiry bloke with a flat cap and stories for days. He was fixing his bike, chain in one hand, pint of tea in the other. “New building up there, eh? Fancy views, but it’s the bay that’ll steal your soul.” Turned out he’d fished these waters for forty years, regaling us with yarns about smuggling brandy back in the day (or so he claimed). When I asked about the best chippy, he slapped my back: “Right here, lad! None of that posh nonsense.” We queued up, and sure enough, his batter was legendary – crispy as a North Sea gale.

Evening found us chatting with Sheila at the mini-mart round the corner, picking up milk and biscuits. She was all bustle, with a sharp tongue and sharper wit. “Third floor, are ya? Watch the lift – it’s lazier than my ex!” She shared how the bay views never get old, even after decades here, and slipped us a local tip: sunset from the Spa cliff path. We tried it that night, and she was spot on.

Staying there made me reflect – amid the quirky chats and daft mishaps, I realised how these characters breathe life into a place. No five-star hotel could match Madge’s tales or Derek’s grin. Scarborough’s magic isn’t just the views; it’s the people who make you feel like you’ve come home. We’re already plotting a return.
