About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from Leeds. Picture this: me, my other half, and our two kids crammed into the car with suitcases teetering like a game of Tetris, the sat-nav deciding halfway that it fancied a scenic detour through some winding B-roads that looked more like goat tracks. Then, the pièce de résistance – a sudden downpour turned the windscreen into a waterfall, and I spent ten minutes faffing with the wipers while the kids chanted "Are we there yet?" from the back. By the time we rolled into town, I was knackered, hair frizzy, and questioning why we hadn't just booked a staycation in the garden.

But oh, the anticipation had been building all week – visions of chippy teas, donkey rides, and that classic seaside buzz. Pulling up outside our ground-floor apartment in the heart of it all, right by the shops and pubs, my heart did a little flip. It looked proper inviting, this two-bedroom holiday home tucked into a townhouse, all welcoming and unpretentious. We bundled out, arms full, and fumbled with the key safe – another mini mishap as the code wouldn't play ball at first, leaving us shivering on the doorstep like drowned rats. The kids were already moaning about the rain, but once we tumbled inside, it was like flipping a switch.

First impressions? Blimey, they don't come much better. The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space hit you straight away – spotless, modern, and laid out so you could actually relax without tripping over clutter. I dumped the bags and headed for that breakfast bar, imagining lazy brekkies with fresh bread from the bakery down the road. The kids dashed out to the enclosed patio, whooping at the outdoor seating setup, even in the drizzle – perfect for a sunny alfresco supper later, they reckoned. It's the sort of place that's spot-on for a family like ours: compact but clever, with everything you need to whip up a storm in the fully-equipped kitchen or just flop on the sofa after a day out.

We didn't waste time settling in. A quick change into dry clothes, and we were off for first dibs on Scarborough's seaside treats. Strolled down to the harbour, grabbed fish and chips wrapped in newspaper from a no-nonsense spot, the salty sea air mixing with vinegar fumes. The kids fed the seagulls (much to my horror – one dive-bombed my chips), and we wandered the prom, peering at the boats bobbing in the bay. Back at the flat that evening, patio doors cracked open despite the chill, we scoffed our tea while watching the world go by – locals nipping to the pubs, holidaymakers like us buzzing with that end-of-day glow.

Sitting there later, pint in hand (well, tea for me, responsible driver and all), I had a proper moment of reflection. Amid the arrival pandemonium, I'd forgotten how these little escapes recharge the batteries. No grand adventures needed – just this cracking spot, slap bang in the action, near enough to the North Bay paddling pool for tomorrow's splashabout and the moors if we fancied a gentle hike. Scarborough's got that unspoiled charm, and this apartment nailed it: comfy, central, and chaos-proof. Can't wait for day two.
