We set off for Sail Lodge with the usual mix of excitement and mild chaos, only to discover halfway there that I’d packed the beach towels but forgotten the actual swimsuits. By the time we pulled into the little car park beside the cottage, the sun was already high and the sea was glinting just beyond the low wall. The mishap felt oddly fitting; it set the tone for a weekend of doing almost nothing at all.

Sail Lodge sits right on the edge of the South Bay, a neat little place with a wooden bench outside and views straight onto the sand. The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was once the engine stopped—only the soft rush of waves and the occasional gull. We dumped our bags, made a cup of tea in the sunny kitchen, and wandered straight out onto the beach without a plan. The tide was out, leaving wide stretches of damp sand perfect for slow, aimless strolling.

That first afternoon we simply sat on the bench with our tea, watching people walk their dogs and children build lopsided castles. I’d brought a book I’d been meaning to finish for months; by the time the sun dipped a little lower I’d only managed three chapters because the view kept distracting me. It felt like a small victory rather than a failure. Later we strolled along the prom for fish and chips, ate them on the cottage steps, and called it an early night.

The next morning we woke to proper sunshine. Instead of rushing anywhere we stayed in our pyjamas until nearly ten, then carried deckchairs onto the little patch of grass in front of the lodge. My partner read the paper while I dozed, occasionally opening one eye to check the sea was still there. Around lunchtime we wandered down to the beach again, this time with the right kit, and spent an hour paddling in water that was just cold enough to make us laugh. Back at the cottage we opened the windows, let the breeze move through, and did very little else.

By the second evening I realised I hadn’t checked my phone properly since we arrived. The usual list of things I thought I should be doing had quietly slipped away. There was something gently freeing about measuring the day by how many cups of tea we’d had and whether the tide was coming in or going out. Sail Lodge made that kind of nothing feel like the whole point.

On our last morning we sat on the bench once more, watching the waves roll in under a pale blue sky. I thought about how rarely we give ourselves permission to slow down this completely. The forgotten swimsuits were still sitting in the boot of the car, untouched and slightly ridiculous, but it didn’t matter. We’d come for the sea and the quiet, and both had delivered exactly what we needed.
