We’d barely pulled off the A64 when the satnav decided to send us down a side street that promptly narrowed into somebody’s driveway. After a three-point turn that involved a wheelie bin and a very unimpressed cat, we finally rolled up outside The Corner House, just a five-minute stroll from the South Bay. The front door stuck a little, but once we wrestled it open the smell of fresh coffee and sea air hit us at once.

Our plan had been ambitious: a proper coastal hike from the cottage straight along Marine Drive, up the zig-zag path to the Castle headland, then down to North Bay for fish and chips. The sun was out, the tide was right, and I’d even packed the proper walking boots instead of my usual optimistic trainers. Ten minutes later the sky had turned that classic Scarborough slate-grey and a fine drizzle started to needle our jackets. We ducked into a café on the front for a consoling pot of tea and watched the waves turn from gentle rollers to proper white horses.

By the time we ventured out again the rain had eased, so we set off along the lower promenade, trainers squelching, determined to at least reach the Spa. Every few hundred metres we stopped to read the plaques about Victorian bathers and to let a wet spaniel shake itself dry against our legs. The wind picked up just past the harbour, whipping my hood inside out and sending a rogue crisp packet dancing around our ankles. We laughed, took the hint, and turned back towards the cottage, promising ourselves a longer walk tomorrow.

Back at The Corner House the little walled yard felt surprisingly sheltered. We kicked off damp shoes, draped jackets over the radiator, and stood at the upstairs window watching the clouds break over the bay. The light changed every minute—patches of gold one moment, bruised purple the next—and I found myself thinking how often our best-laid plans in this part of Yorkshire get rewritten by the weather. It wasn’t the dramatic ridge hike I’d pictured, yet the short, soggy wander had already given us salt-stung cheeks, a pocketful of shells, and the easy rhythm of just being by the sea.

Later, with the heating on low and the kettle bubbling, we spread a map across the kitchen table and traced tomorrow’s possibilities: the cliff path towards Cayton Bay if the forecast behaved, or simply another gentle loop around the South Bay if it didn’t. Either way, the cottage’s proximity to both beaches meant we could step out the door and decide on the hoof—no long drives, no complicated logistics, just trainers by the door and a willingness to get a bit damp. As the smell of fish-and-chip takeaway drifted up the stairs, I realised the mishap on arrival had set the tone perfectly: Scarborough wasn’t about sticking to the itinerary, but about letting the coast and the weather do the steering.
