About Scarborough
The first thing that struck me was how quiet it felt, even though the sea was only a five-minute wander through a gap in the dunes. No clatter of amusement arcades, no queues for fish and chips—just the soft rush of waves and the creak of our own footsteps on the gravel path. Inside, the place smelled faintly of woodsmoke and fresh linen, the sort of scent that makes you kick your shoes off without being told. We dumped our bags, made a quick cuppa, and decided a short stroll before supper couldn’t hurt. Naturally we got lost again. Instead of heading straight to the beach we followed a narrow footpath that wound between tall grasses and came out beside a half-hidden pond where two swans were arguing over a crust someone had left on a bench. Further along, a weather-beaten sign pointed to “Seamer Village Green,” which turned out to be little more than a triangle of grass, a bench, and a honesty-box selling home-made jam. We bought a jar of raspberry on impulse, then promptly forgot which way we’d come. By the time we found ourselves on a shingle stretch locals clearly use instead of the tourist sand, the tide was out and rock pools glinted like somebody had scattered pocket mirrors. A dad and his lad were poking about with nets, and they waved us over to show off a tiny crab they’d caught. We stayed longer than planned, watching the sky turn peach over the water, then realised neither of us had a torch and the path back looked considerably darker than it had an hour earlier. We made it to The Stables eventually, guided more by the smell of someone’s barbecue than by any map. Sitting on the little bench outside with our raspberry jam on toast, I found myself thinking how often holidays start with grand plans and end up being rescued by the bits you never meant to see. The mishaps had done what no itinerary could: they’d dropped us straight into the sort of unhurried corners that make you wonder why you ever bother booking the obvious sights in the first place. |
