We’d barely made it off the train at Scarborough when the rain decided to join us for the final leg. I’d confidently declared we didn’t need the car after all—“It’s only a short walk”—and then watched our wheelie case bounce into a puddle the size of the North Sea while my partner tried not to laugh. By the time we reached Tower View, socks squelching and hair plastered to our foreheads, the little cottage felt like a lifeboat. Its neat front garden was dotted with bright geraniums that somehow looked cheerful even in the drizzle, and the moment we stepped inside the warmth hit us like a hug.

We dumped our bags, made tea in mismatched mugs, and stood at the window watching the clouds race over the bay. The forecast had promised “bright intervals,” which in Scarborough usually means you’ll get wet twice before lunch, but we weren’t ready to give up on our plan to wander the coast path. We layered up anyway—light waterproofs over T-shirts—and set off along the South Bay promenade, the air smelling of salt and hot doughnuts from the kiosks. The tide was high, waves slapping against the sea wall, and we had to weave between families with pushchairs and teenagers eating chips straight from the paper.

Half an hour later the sun actually appeared, turning the wet sand into a mirror. We took the steep steps up to the cliff path that runs behind the Spa, pausing every few minutes to catch our breath and pretend we were just admiring the view. From there the whole sweep of the bay opened out—colourful beach huts, the stubby lighthouse on the far pier, and the faint outline of the castle ruins on the headland. We kept going until the path levelled out near the little café at the top, where we shared a slightly stale scone and watched a group of walkers with proper boots and trekking poles march past like they were on an expedition.

By mid-afternoon the clouds had regrouped, and a fine mist rolled in off the sea, the sort that soaks you without you noticing. We turned back, laughing about how our “coastal hike” had turned into a brisk stroll with meteorological commentary. Still, there was something oddly satisfying about getting properly windblown on the first day; it felt like we’d earned our fish-and-chip supper. Back at Tower View we peeled off damp layers, hung them over the radiator, and sat on the little bench outside with mugs of hot chocolate, listening to the gulls argue over the bins.

I keep thinking about that suitcase in the puddle. It was such a small thing, but it set the tone for the whole trip—plans changing, weather barging in, and us rolling with it anyway. Maybe that’s the real joy of a few days by the Yorkshire coast: you arrive expecting one sort of adventure and end up with something messier and better.
