About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from Leeds. I'd been buzzing with anticipation all morning—visions of crashing waves, fish and chips, and a proper seaside break dancing in my head. But no, the universe had other plans. About 20 minutes from the coast, I hit a massive tailback on the A64 thanks to some roadworks that weren't on my sat-nav. Then, in a moment of pure daftness, I took a wrong turn into a narrow lane that dead-ended at a farm gate. Cue me reversing like a learner driver, heart in mouth, with a flock of sheep eyeing me suspiciously. By the time I pulled up outside the holiday cottage, I was frazzled, covered in crisp crumbs from a hasty service station lunch, and questioning my life choices.

Still, the first glimpse of the place wiped all that away. It's one of those classic Scarborough terraced cottages, all cosy and tucked into a quiet street just a short stroll from the South Cliff. Whitewashed exterior with those neat bay windows, flower baskets dangling cheerfully—proper postcard stuff. I fumbled the keys from the key safe (nearly dropping them down a drain in my haste), and stepped inside to the smell of fresh linen and a welcome pack of tea bags and biscuits. Blimey, what a relief. The living room was snug as a bug, with a telly begging for episodes of Strictly, and the kitchen kitted out enough to whip up a full English without faffing about.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out, the sea air hitting us like a tonic. First stop: a wander down to the beach. Scarborough's South Bay was living up to its rep—golden sand stretching out, donkey rides plodding along, and the funfair's lights twinkling even in daylight. I grabbed the obligatory chips from a beach hut, vinegar dripping everywhere, and we scoffed them while dodging seagulls that looked like they were plotting world domination. Laughed my head off when one dive-bombed my other half, nicking a chip mid-air. Pure comedy gold.

Later, we ambled up to the Italian Gardens—those lush terraces with fountains and flowerbeds that make you feel like you've stumbled into a posh park. Sat there with a brew from the nearby cafe, watching families picnic and dogs chase balls. It's the kind of spot that slows everything down. Made me reflect a bit, actually—back home, life's a non-stop whirl of deadlines and doom-scrolling. Here, in this unassuming little cottage, it was like hitting pause. No grand epiphanies, just a quiet nudge that maybe I need more of this: mishaps and all.

Evening rolled in with a sunset over the bay that turned the sky pink and orange. We cracked open a bottle of wine back at the cottage, feet up on the comfy sofa, planning tomorrow's assault on the castle ruins up the hill. Arrival chaos forgotten, first impressions? Spot on. Scarborough's got that magic—rough around the edges, but all heart. Can't wait for day two.
