About Scarborough
I finally made it to that barn conversion just outside Scarborough after what felt like the daftest drive up from Leeds. Sat nav decided to have a midlife crisis halfway through the North York Moors, rerouting us down a single-track lane that was more puddle than path—our little hatchback bottomed out twice, splashing mud up the sides like we'd been mud-wrestling. I was convinced we'd end up calling the AA, but we laughed it off, windows down, radio blasting some old Oasis tunes to drown out the swearing... er, colourful language.

Heart racing a bit from the chaos, we crested the hill into this stunning spot in the national park, all rolling moors and that fresh sea air sneaking in from the coast. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The place is all ground floor, dead handy after our car saga—no stairs to lug bags up—and it screamed cosy countryside chic without trying too hard. Pulled up, and there it was: this welcoming open-plan haven, sunlight streaming through the windows onto the sleek breakfast bar. We dumped our muddy boots by the door (apologies to the owners) and just stood there grinning like idiots.

Kettle on first, obviously—nothing says "holiday" like a proper brew. The kitchen's kitted out brilliantly for knocking up something hearty, like a fry-up with Yorkshire black pudding from the local shops we'd spotted en route. We rustled up cheese on toast with some local cheddar, perched at that bar, clinking mugs and toasting our survival. Proper romantic, even if I did burn the edges a tad. From there, we flopped into the sitting area, feet up, and exhaled. The views out the back? Pure magic—moorland stretching out, sheep ambling about, and in the distance, that tantalising glimpse of the sea towards Scarborough.

That evening, we wandered a short path into Scalby for fish and chips from a chippy that smelled like heaven—crispy batter, mushy peas, the works. Sat on a bench by the green, watching families head to the beach, and I had this quiet moment thinking, "You know, life's too short for perfect plans." Our arrival mishap? Turned it into the best story. Next morning, picnic packed (sandwiches, flask of tea, and flapjacks), we drove the scenic few miles to Scarborough's South Bay. Paddled in the chilly North Sea, built a rubbish sandcastle that the tide claimed in minutes—laughed till our sides hurt. Afternoon hike along the cliffs to Cornelian Bay, wind in our hair, spotting seals bobbing offshore. Back at the cottage, we lit the fire (logs provided, bless 'em), cracked open a bottle of red, and planned bugger all.

It's funny how a bumpy start makes the good bits shine brighter. This spot's nailed that balance—rural peace one minute, coastal buzz the next. If you're after a proper Yorkshire escape, without the crowds, this is it. Can't wait to go back.
