About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from Leeds. I'd been buzzing with anticipation all morning—visions of crashing waves, chippy teas, and proper sea air filling my head—but then the sat-nav decided to have a mid-journey meltdown. It rerouted me down some narrow country lane that turned into a single-track nightmare, complete with a flock of sheep blocking the way and a farmer giving me the evil eye as I tried to reverse my little hatchback without ending up in a ditch. Heart racing, I eventually extricated myself, only to hit Scarborough's infamous traffic jam right by the harbour. By the time I pulled up to the holiday cottage, I was frazzled, parched, and questioning my life choices.

But oh, what a turnaround. The property was this charming detached cottage, all cosy and inviting with its classic seaside vibe—think welcoming porch light flickering on as dusk fell, and flower baskets swaying gently in the breeze. I fumbled the keys at first (nerves, you know), but stepping inside? Pure magic. It was spotlessly clean, with a lovely open-plan living area that screamed "relax here forever." The kitchen was kitted out brilliantly—fridge humming away, fresh towels stacked neatly, and even a cheeky welcome pack with tea bags and biscuits. I cracked open a brew straight away, sinking into the squishy sofa while gazing out at the garden view. First impressions? Ten out of ten. All that arrival faff melted away in seconds.

We'd booked it for a spontaneous seaside getaway, just me and my other half, and it felt perfect from the off. That evening, we wandered down to the South Bay beach—it's only a short stroll away—and paddled in the chilly North Sea, laughing as the waves nipped at our toes. The sun dipped low, painting the cliffs in that golden glow Scarborough does so well. Back at the cottage, we rustled up fish and chips from the local spot (proper haddock, mushy peas, the works), eaten straight out of the paper on the patio. Bliss.

The next morning brought more delights. A brisk walk along the promenade to the Spa, where we caught a bit of live music drifting over—nothing fancy, just that feel-good holiday hum. We mooched around the Italian Gardens, which are a hidden gem right by the cliff edge, all manicured hedges and sea vistas. Lunch was a cream tea at a café overlooking the bay; scones so fluffy I nearly inhaled mine. Back at base, the cottage's snug bedrooms called—comfy beds, fluffy duvets, and windows letting in that salty breeze. No TV binge needed; we just chatted and played cards till late.

Looking back, that bumpy arrival was a right laugh in hindsight—a gentle nudge that holidays aren't about perfection, but those "phew, made it" moments. Selfishly, it made everything else shine brighter. Scarborough's got that unpretentious charm, and this little cottage was the ideal spot to soak it up. If you're after a proper Yorkshire coast escape without the hassle, you can't go wrong. Can't wait to go back—minus the sheep standoff, hopefully.
