About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after a bit of a faff on the journey up from Leeds. I'd set off full of beans, excited for a proper autumn getaway, but wouldn't you know it, about halfway there the sat-nav decided to have a hissy fit and sent me down some winding country lane that looked more like a sheep track. Leaves everywhere, golden and crunchy under the tyres, turning the whole detour into an unexpected burst of seasonal magic—proper Yorkshire autumn at its finest, with the sun filtering through the turning trees like something out of a postcard. By the time I arrived, I was buzzing with anticipation, imagining cosy nights in with the sea breeze whispering through the window.

Pulling up to the holiday cottage, my first impressions were spot on—it was this charming terraced spot right in the heart of Scarborough, all welcoming with its classic coastal vibe. Stepped inside and straight away felt that hug of warmth against the crisp October chill outside. The time of year made it perfect; no summer crowds to jostle with, just that mellow autumn hush settling over everything.

First morning, I wandered down to the South Cliff promenade, the sea air sharp and invigorating, carrying that salty tang mixed with the earthy scent of fallen leaves skittering along the path. The waves were crashing a bit livelier than in summer, whipped up by the seasonal winds, and I treated myself to fish and chips from a takeaway near the Brunswick Shopping Centre—proper crispy batter, and at this time of year, hardly a queue in sight. Sat on a bench watching the gulls wheel overhead, feeling a right proper sense of contentment wash over me.

Afternoons were for exploring the Scarborough headlands, where the bracken was turning that gorgeous rusty red, and the cliffs looked dramatic under those moody skies. I even managed a gentle stroll along the Cleveland Way trail nearby, crunching through leaves and breathing in the fresh, post-rain petrichor—autumn's got that knack for making even a simple walk feel epic. Back at the cottage, I'd light the fire (it had one of those proper open ones) and sip hot tea, listening to the wind rattle the windows. One evening, I headed to Peasholm Park, where the autumn foliage framed the lake like a watercolour painting, and the empty boating lake gave it a peaceful, almost magical feel—no rowdy paddle battles here.

There was this one moment of gentle self-reflection as I sat by the fire on the last night, mug of cocoa in hand, thinking how the season had turned what could’ve been a standard break into something soul-nourishing. Summer Scarborough's brilliant, don't get me wrong, with its beaches buzzing and ice creams galore, but autumn? It's quieter, more introspective, letting you really soak up the place without the frenzy. The fading light on the North Bay, the chill that drives you back indoors for comfort food—it's all shaped the holiday into this perfect little pocket of mellow bliss.

Packed up feeling refreshed, already plotting a return next leaf-peeping season. Scarborough in autumn? Absolute cracker.
