About Scarborough
I’ll never forget the drive up to Scarborough – we’d packed the car to the gills with snacks, wellies, and enough board games to keep us going through a nuclear winter. Me and the missus, celebrating our 15th anniversary with a proper family do, kids in tow. About 20 miles out, disaster struck: the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down some winding B-road that felt like it was auditioning for a rally stage. We ended up in a muddy layby, laughing our heads off as I tried to reverse out without embedding the tyres in a puddle the size of Windermere. Twenty minutes later, we were back on track, hearts racing but buzzing with that holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where Scarborough’s sea air already feels like it’s calling your name.

Pulling through the open gateway, we were gobsmacked. This immaculate modern dormer bungalow, just two miles from Scarborough town centre, sat surrounded by beautiful gardens, right in that sweet spot close to the seafront and all the amenities. Ample parking meant no faffing about with dodgy street spots, and stepping into the generous entrance hall, we were drawn straight into the stunning sitting room. Four comfy settees, a cracking living-flame gas fire – it screamed “cosy nights in” from the off. Light, spacious rooms everywhere, perfect for our little crew to sprawl out without tripping over each other. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open the prosecco before the kettle had even boiled.

The next few days were pure bliss, all about those simple pleasures that make cottage life so addictive. Mornings kicked off with brekkie in the sunlit kitchen, then a short hop to the beach for sandcastles and bracing dips in the North Sea – the kids went mental paddling at South Bay, while we pretended we weren’t freezing our toes off. Afternoons meant ambling along the promenade, fish and chips from a proper chippy (none of that healthy nonsense), and a cheeky ice cream from one of those parlours that’s been slinging 99s since the war. We even bubbled away in the hot tub one evening, watching the sun dip behind the cliffs, steam rising like we were in our own private spa. Chaos crept in, mind – the youngest managed to spill Ribena on the settee (cue frantic dabbing with kitchen roll), and I burned the toast twice trying to master the gas hob. Proper family stuff, the sort that leaves you knackered but grinning.

One night, as we huddled by the fire playing Uno – with the obligatory arguments over wild cards – I had a proper moment of reflection. Fifteen years married, kids growing like weeds, and here we were in this cracking Scarborough spot, surrounded by the dramatic North York Moors views just a wander away. Life’s too short not to chase these bits: no agendas, just sea breezes, laughter, and the odd mishap to keep it real. We didn’t need fancy jaunts; the cottage chaos and coastal simplicity were spot on. Can’t wait to go back – next time, I’m bringing a better sat-nav.
