About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from Leeds. Picture this: me, behind the wheel of our overloaded estate car, crammed with suitcases, beach gear, and enough snacks to feed a small army, when halfway along the A170, the heavens open and the sat-nav decides to throw a proper wobbly. It kept rerouting us down these tiny lanes that looked more like sheep tracks, and just as I was swearing under my breath (well, quietly, with kids in the back), we hit a massive pothole that sent a bag of crisps flying everywhere. Crispy chaos in the footwell – classic me, turning a two-hour trip into a three-hour comedy of errors. But as we crested the hill and spotted the sea glinting below, all that stress melted away. Scarborough's skyline, with its castle perched up there like an old mate keeping watch, had me grinning like an idiot. Arrival anticipation? Mate, I was buzzing.

Pulling up to this cracking five-storey Victorian holiday home right in the thick of it all, smack in the heart of the resort, my first impressions were spot on brilliant. We tumbled out, still picking crisp crumbs off our laps, into this massive welcoming hallway that screamed "come on in and make yourself at home." It was like stepping into a posh seaside hug – contemporary artwork on the walls catching the light just right, and you could already imagine sinking into that babbling hot tub out back after a day pounding the promenade. Walking distance to everything? Tick. Fish and chips at The Magpie, a paddle on South Bay beach, maybe a cheeky bag of fudge from one of those sweet shops – perfect for our multi-generational crew of me, the wife, nan, and the grandkids.

We dumped the bags and explored like excited puppies. Off the hallway, two cracking sitting rooms: one all coastal blues with a telly and a stack of books that had me eyeing a quick thriller before tea, the other a zingy green with turquoise sofas begging for smaller groups to flop on and natter. Downstairs to the lower-ground floor – oh, hello! A dining room with two big tables, plenty of seats for us lot to squash around without elbows in the mash. Next door, the kitchen was a dream for the missus, who loves playing head chef – fully kitted out for whipping up brekkies, sarnies, or a full roast. The kids beelined for the games room with its PlayStation and TV, vanishing faster than you can say "high score." Us adults claimed the extra sitting area for a pre-dinner bevvie, then peeked at the courtyard hot tub – steaming away invitingly, ready for unwinding under the stars.

Utility room for rinsing off sandy towels from North Bay? Check. Cloakroom for all our beach clobber? Sorted. Bedrooms scattered over the upper floors, each with that stylish coastal vibe, en-suites, and their own TVs – no squabbles over who gets the remote. As I stood there amid the arrival mayhem, bags half-unpacked and kids already arguing over the games console, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's too short for perfect journeys, innit? This place, with its buzz and comfort, turned our soggy, crumb-filled start into pure holiday magic. Can't wait to hit the beach tomorrow – if we can drag the lads out of that hot tub first.
