This North Yorkshire village lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, near the coast. Famous for dinosaur footprints on its rocks, it has a shop/post office, two pubs serving food, and a village hall with play park and tennis courts. Nearby Scarborough offers classic seaside charms, amenities, activities, and a grand castle. About Scarborough
I finally made it to Cloughton after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive from Leeds. Sat nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Whitby, rerouting us down a narrow lane that was basically a goat track – complete with actual goats eyeing us suspiciously as we squeezed past. My other half was gripping the dashboard like it was a parachute, and I nearly ploughed into a hedge trying to avoid a rogue pheasant. By the time we pulled up outside this gorgeous little property on the high street, we were frazzled, covered in crisp crumbs from a frantic service station stop, and questioning our life choices. But honestly, that anticipation bubbling up as we spotted the place? Worth every white-knuckle minute.

Stepping inside was like a warm hug from an old mate. It's this proper cosy cottage, perfect for a family jaunt or mates' getaway, tucked right into the heart of the village. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – I mean, spot on. The kitchen-diner hit me straight away: window seats begging for a brew and a gaze out at the quiet street, plus all the mod cons you'd need to whip up a full English without faffing about. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bag of teabags – home from home in seconds.

After that drive, collapsing into the sitting room felt like bliss. There's a woodburning stove just screaming for logs (we got it going later, don't worry), and the sort of squashy sofas that make you forget you've got legs. We sat there, feet up, listening to the faint hum of village life outside, and I couldn't help but chuckle at ourselves. Here we were, two city slickers who'd survived goat alleys and near-misses, now proper chilled in this gem of a spot. It's only 1.1 miles to Burniston, so we're ideally placed for a gentle wander along the coast path tomorrow – those North Yorkshire cliffs are calling already.

That first evening, we pottered about, rustling up pasta in the kitchen (plenty of gadgets to make it dead easy), and just soaked it in. No grand plans, just the joy of being somewhere that feels lived-in and lovely. Made me reflect a bit, actually – we rush about so much back home, always chasing the next thing. This place? It's a gentle nudge to slow down, crack a smile at the mishaps, and appreciate the simple stuff. Like how the light filters through those windows at dusk, turning everything golden.

We've got walks to Hayburn Wyke beach on the cards – it's a short hop, proper dramatic with its coves and waterfalls – and maybe a pub lunch in the village if the weather holds. Cloughton's got that unspoiled vibe, close enough to Scarborough's buzz without the crowds. Can't wait to explore more, but right now, after our arrival circus, I'm just grateful for this nook. If you're after a coastal escape that starts with a bang (or a bump) and settles into pure relaxation, this is your spot. Proper recommend.
