About Scarborough
I’ll never forget the drive up to Scarborough – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past York, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a muddy farm track. Heart in my mouth, tyres slipping, we finally backtracked, laughing at our daft selves, and arrived at this cosy attached cottage on the edge of the North York Moors, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. Stepping through the front patio into the open-plan living room, I was smitten straight away – sofas begging you to flop down by the woodburning stove, and that dining spot with a cracking view out front. The kitchen’s modern enough for knocking up a decent lasagne without faffing about. Perfect setup for kicking back with mates or family.

But honestly, the real magic kicked in when we ditched the usual Scarborough tourist traps – you know, the donkey rides and chip shops on the front – and let ourselves get properly lost. That’s the joy of this spot, tucked on the fringes of the moors with the sea not far off. First morning, fancying a wander, we veered off the main path towards Seamer and stumbled on this hidden wooded dell by Irton Dale. No signs, no crowds – just a babbling stream, bluebells nodding in the breeze (even if it was a tad late in the season), and a rickety bench where we picnicked on cheese sarnies. Felt like we’d nicked a secret from the locals.

Next day, aiming for a moors hike, we took a wrong turn down a single-track lane near Crossgates and ended up at this abandoned quarry turned wildflower meadow. Butterflies everywhere, old stone walls tumbling into grass taller than me – pure poetry. We sprawled out for hours, spotting kestrels hovering like tiny helicopters. Laughed when I tripped over a rabbit hole, emerging covered in mud like a right numpty. “Serves you right for not watching your feet,” my other half chuckled. Gentle reminder, that – holidays are for slowing down, aren’t they? Not charging about like headless chickens.

Evenings, we’d potter back to the cottage, stove crackling, cooking up a storm while plotting the next daft detour. One night, got ourselves lost again looping round the edges of Weaponness Valley – discovered a tucked-away pond alive with dragonflies and reeds whispering in the wind. No one else there; just us, the sunset painting the sky pink over the moors, and that deep-down contentment of finding your own little world.

Scarborough’s seaside buzz is only a short hop away for fish suppers or a paddle at North Bay, but these accidental gems? They’re the ones that stick. Getting lost here isn’t a faff – it’s the best bit. If you’re after proper unwinding with a side of discovery, this neck of the woods delivers. Can’t wait to go back and lose myself all over again.
