About Scarborough
Stepping through those French doors into the open-plan living room was pure bliss – bright, airy, and just begging for us to kick off our shoes and crack open a bottle of wine. It’s the sort of place that welcomes you with open arms, perfect for our little family getaway. First impressions? Spot on. We’d been daydreaming about proper Yorkshire grub all week, and with the moors and coast so close, we knew we were in for a treat. That first evening, we rummaged through the well-stocked kitchen – quality bits and bobs everywhere, making it dead easy to whip up something simple. I fancied myself a chef and tried my hand at a Yorkshire pud batter with local eggs we’d grabbed en route, but let’s just say they came out more like sad pancakes than fluffy clouds. My other half salvaged it with some shop-bought sausages from the Co-op in Seamer, and we laughed it off over a makeshift dinner, toasting to better efforts tomorrow. Gentle reminder to self: stick to eating, not cooking. Next morning, we wandered down to Scarborough’s market on the harbour – what a buzz! Stalls heaving with fresh crab from the boats, plump strawberries from nearby farms, and wheels of local cheese that smelled like heaven. We loaded up on Whitby scampi, artisan bread, and a punnet of the juiciest tomatoes I’ve ever tasted. Back at the cottage, lunch was a feast: scampi fried up crisp with a squeeze of lemon, crusty bread slathered in butter, and cheese that melted dreamily on crackers. Sat by the window with those countryside views, it felt like we’d struck gold. Evenings were for the pubs. The nearest in Seamer, just a short stroll away, served up cracking pints of Black Sheep and homemade pies that were all flaky pastry and tender beef. One night we ambled into Scarborough town – five minutes by car – and hit The Cask in Valley for fish and chips that were golden, greasy perfection, wrapped in paper and scoffed overlooking South Bay. Another go at cooking led to a risible pasta disaster (overcooked linguine, underdone sauce – chef’s kiss to my lack of skills), but we drowned sorrows in local ale and vowed to stick to takeaways next time. The markets kept calling us back, too – Valley Bridge market had these divine fudge stalls and pork pies that vanished in seconds. We even tried baking sconks with clotted cream from a farm shop nearby, and miracle of miracles, they weren’t half bad. It’s funny how a holiday like this sneaks up on you, turning food into the heartbeat of the trip. Self-reflection over a cream tea: maybe I’m not a total lost cause in the kitchen after all. By the end, bellies full and souls content, we’d devoured the best of Yorkshire without straying far. Proper holiday magic. |
