About Scarborough
I’ll never forget the drive up to Scarborough – me behind the wheel, my wife Liz navigating with that sat-nav that kept insisting we turn left into the North Sea. We’d left Leeds early, full of that buzzy anticipation you get before a proper getaway, dreaming of fish and chips by the beach and lazy evenings with no alarm clock. But about 20 miles out, disaster struck: a rogue seagull dive-bombed our windscreen, leaving a feathery splatter that turned the glass into a Jackson Pollock painting. We pulled over giggling like kids, wiping it off with baby wipes while swearing off picnic lunches for birds.

By the time we rolled into Scarborough, the sun was peeking through the clouds, and the town’s classic charm hit us like a warm hug. Those steep streets lined with candy-striped shops, the salty tang in the air – it was pure seaside magic. Our town house was just a short stroll from the harbour, a cosy three-bedder with a lived-in feel that screamed family holidays. Whitewashed exterior, welcoming porch, and inside, it had that perfect mix of snug sofas and a kitchen begging for bacon sarnies. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and just breathed it all in.

The next few days blurred into that blissful cottage chaos we crave as a couple in our forties – no kids, no schedules, just us pottering about. Mornings started with brews on the little patio, watching fishing boats bob in the bay, then a wander down to South Sands. It’s quieter than the North Beach crush, with soft sand perfect for ambling hand-in-hand, dodging jellyfish washed up by the tide. We’d grab crab sandwiches from a beach hut – fresh as you like, with that proper lemony zing – and flop on the pebbles, letting the waves lap our toes.

Afternoons meant gentle rambles along the headland paths, peering over cliffs at the castle ruins silhouetted against the sky. The wind whipped our hair into mad shapes, and I caught myself laughing at how daft we looked, but it felt brilliant. Back at the house, we’d rustle up simple suppers – think pasta with local smoked kippers or a cheat’s pie from the Co-op – spilling flour everywhere in the tiny kitchen. One evening, Liz tried her hand at rock pooling in the rock pools near the harbour, only to yelp when a cheeky crab nipped her toe. “Survival of the fittest!” I teased, bandaging her with a plaster and a kiss.

It wasn’t all smooth; the house’s steep stairs had me huffing like an old steam train after too many cream teas from Valley Gardens. But that’s the joy of it, isn’t it? These spots force you to slow down, swap gym selfies for sandy strolls. Sat on the front step one sunset, rosé in hand, watching families trail ice creams home, I had a quiet moment thinking how we’d got so caught up in the daily grind back home. Scarborough reminded us: simple stuff like this – chaotic, windswept, utterly real – is what recharges the soul. We’re already plotting our next escape.
