Perched on Whitby’s East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea are the remains of Gothic Whitby Abbey. The first monastery on the site was founded in 657, which became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world. To get to the Abbey you can count the 199 steps to the top of the headland from the town.

About Scarborough
Me and the missus had been counting down the days to our little getaway near Scarborough, dreaming of proper Yorkshire coast vibes and escaping the daily grind. The drive up from Leeds was meant to be a breeze, but wouldn't you know it, we hit a massive queue on the A171 thanks to some cheeky sheep blocking the road – classic moors mishap! I was fuming at first, tapping the wheel like an impatient toddler, but we turned it into a laugh, belting out old Oasis tunes to pass the time. By the time we turned off towards Scalby, about two miles from Scarborough town, the anticipation was buzzing – rolling hills of the North York Moors stretching out, sea glimpses winking in the distance.

Pulling up to the cottage, just five miles from Scarborough's buzz, we were gobsmacked by the first impressions. Tucked right in the national park's embrace, this cosy two-up-two-down number screamed romantic retreat for us lovebirds – perfect for a chilled couple's break. The open countryside views hit us like a warm hug, and stepping inside felt like slipping into a favourite jumper: all the essentials for a lazy week, from the well-kitted kitchen to that plush leather sofa begging for Netflix sessions.

First morning, we cracked on with brekkie – I rustled up bacon butties while she fiddled with the Smart TV's Freeview, hunting for some rubbish daytime telly. The open-plan living room became our hub, sunlight streaming in as we planned nowt much at all. A short hop into Scarborough had us wandering the harbour, snaffling fish and chips from a proper greasy spoon, the salty sea air mixing with vinegar tang. We dodged the donkey rides on the beach – too touristy for our vibe – and instead mooched along the South Cliff, hands linked, watching families build sandcastles. Back at the cottage by tea time, chaos ensued: I burned the shepherd's pie (my cooking skills are legendary for all the wrong reasons), so we salvaged it with a cheeky bottle of red and a rom-com marathon. Laughing about my kitchen disasters felt like the best therapy – gentle nudge to myself that I'm no Gordon Ramsay, but hey, that's why we make a team.

Afternoons blurred into gentle rambles along the coastal paths towards Scalby Mills, spotting seals bobbing in the waves and picking blackberries for a half-arsed crumble. Evenings were pure bliss: cosying up on the sofa, her feet in my lap, debating whether to brave the moors for a sunset stroll or just crack open the board games. One night, we did venture out to a Scarborough pub for a pint of Black Sheep – proper Yorkshire ale – but mostly it was cottage life heaven: the simple joy of no emails, no rush, just us and the rhythm of the tides.

Reflecting now, that week was a reminder that the best holidays aren't about ticking boxes, but those quiet moments of connection amid the lovely disorder. Scarborough's coast and moors worked their magic – we'll be back for more of that unhurried magic before you can say "another cuppa?"
