  • Whitby Abbey

Perched on Whitby’s East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea are the remains of Gothic Whitby Abbey. The first monastery on the site was founded in 657, which became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world. To get to the Abbey you can count the 199 steps to the top of the headland from the town.

About Whitby
I’ll never forget the drive up to Whitby – one of those classic British road trips where the satnav decides to have a midlife crisis just as you hit the moors. We’d piled into the car from Leeds, kids in the back bickering over crisps, and about halfway there, the heavens opened. Cue a frantic dash to a layby for the emergency umbrella that turned out to be more hole than fabric. Soaked to the skin, we laughed it off, but honestly, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – visions of crashing waves and fish and chips dancing in my head.

Pulling up to the place felt like stumbling into a hug. It’s this cracking contemporary-styled dwelling, just a stone’s throw from Whitby’s charming town centre and those endless golden sands. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside, the open-plan living room wrapped us in this fresh, breezy colour scheme – think calming blues and greys that made you exhale. Plump sofas, a telly begging for lazy Netflix binges, and all the bits you need for a proper unwind. The kitchen’s a dream too, with its central island perfect for me fumbling about with breakfast while the others sip tea and gaze out the window.

But let’s be real, the joy of this holiday was doing sod all. Absolutely nowt. After years of rushing about like headless chickens – work, school runs, the lot – this was our chance to slam on the brakes. The garden sealed the deal: a sunny little haven with loungers that practically begged you to flop down with a book. I’d crack open a battered paperback (some daft crime thriller I’d been meaning to read for ages), and just... melt. The kids would potter about, building pebble castles or chasing butterflies, while we adults nursed endless cups of builder’s tea. No schedules, no alarms – just the gentle hum of the sea in the distance and the odd seagull squawking overhead.

One afternoon, I caught myself staring at the clouds drifting over the abbey ruins on the headland, and had a proper moment. Blimey, I thought, when did life get so frantic? Here we were, a few minutes’ wander from the beach, yet we barely left the garden. A mate popped over with pasties from one of those cracking Whitby chip shops – proper job, flaky pastry and all – and we devoured them al fresco, swapping daft stories till the sun dipped low. Evenings blurred into board games by the window, with the moors rolling out like a green quilt beyond.

It was blissfully soporific. No epic hikes up the North York Moors (though they tempted from afar), no battling crowds on the sands. Just slow, sunny days that forced you to breathe deep and savour the quiet. Reflecting now, I reckon that’s the real magic of a spot like this – reminding you that holidays aren’t about ticking boxes, but about switching off and letting the world spin without you. We left feeling utterly recharged, already plotting a return. Whitby, you’ve got me hooked.
