About Whitby
I finally made it to Whitby after that daft little mishap on the A171 – took a wrong turn near Robin Hood's Bay and ended up in a queue of caravans crawling along like they had all day. Still, the anticipation built as the North York Moors gave way to those stunning coastal views, the sea sparkling like it was rolling out the red carpet. By the time I pulled up, I was buzzing, ready to flop into holiday mode.

Stepping into this exquisite top-floor apartment felt like stumbling into a secret hideaway. Tucked in a prime spot in the heart of picturesque Whitby, it's got this wood-panelled rooftop oasis that's pure magic – my kind of luxurious escape for kicking back with mates or family. First impressions? Spot on. The salty ocean breeze hit me straight away as I hauled my bags up, and from the chic rooftop terrace, you can practically hear the harbour humming just 500 metres down the road.

But honestly, the joy of this trip was doing sod all – proper lazy cottage days, if you can call an apartment a cottage. Mornings started slow: a potter in the kitchen for tea and toast, then up to the rooftop with a book and a blanket. That terrace became my world – lounging under the sun, feeling the breeze tousle my hair, watching gulls wheel over the harbour. No rush, no plans, just the gentle lap of waves in the distance and the odd fishing boat chugging out. I cracked open a battered copy of Dracula – fitting, since we're in Whitby, Bram Stoker's haunt – and lost hours turning pages while the world slowed to a drip.

Afternoons blurred into the same blissful rhythm. A light lunch salvaged from the local co-op (nothing fancy, just cheese sarnies), then back to the rooftop for more reading. The garden-like oasis up there, with its cosy nooks and that wood panelling wrapping you like a hug, made it impossible to leave. I'd sip a cold drink, eyes half-closed, letting the town's chatter drift up – ice cream vans, laughing kids on the beach, the faint clang of the swing bridge. One day, I spotted a whale-spotting boat glide out from the harbour; tempted for a sec, but nah, the sofa won. Why chase adventure when paradise is right here, two floors up?

There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one evening, sundowner in hand (sparkling elderflower, if you must know), as the sun dipped behind the abbey ruins across the water. Staring out, I realised how rare it is to just... be. Work's always nagging, life's a sprint, but here? Time stretched out lazy and lovely. No FOMO, no scroll, just me, the breeze, and a cracking good book. A mate texted asking about hikes up to the abbey – sent back a photo of my feet up, captioned "This is my hike." Laughed at myself, but it felt right.

Those few days recharged me more than any jaunt ever could. If you're after Whitby's charm without the hustle, find yourself a spot like this. Slow down, read, breathe the sea air – it's the holiday your soul's been craving.
