About Whitby
I’ll never forget the drive up to Whitby – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Leeds turned into a proper comedy of errors. Satnav decided to play silly buggers halfway there, rerouting us down some winding moorland lane that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, just as we crested the hill with that first glimpse of the sea, the heavens opened, and my other half’s brand-new trainers – you know, the ones she swore were waterproof – turned into soggy sponges in seconds. We pulled up outside our ground-floor apartment, drenched and bickering like an old married couple, me fumbling with the keys while the dog shook rainwater all over the pavement. Anticipation? Oh, it was bubbling away alright, mixed with a hefty dose of ‘why didn’t we just stay home?’

But stepping inside? Blimey, it was like the universe handing us a peace offering. This place is a cracker – a spacious, open-plan gem right in the heart of Whitby, perfect for us lot with the dog in tow. No stairs to negotiate with luggage or paws, just straight into this fluid kitchen-diner-lounge setup that instantly felt like home. The kitchen’s kitted out proper: oven, hob, microwave, fridge-freezer, all gleaming and ready for action. We dumped the bags, cranked up the electric heating (cheers for that, after our soggy arrival), and within minutes, tea was brewing while the dog flopped on the rug, claiming his spot.

First impressions? Spot on. From the window, you’ve got that buzz of Whitby humming away – a stone’s throw from the chippy on the harbour, the swing bridge, and the path down to the beach where the waves crash against the West Cliff. We ventured out that first afternoon, still a bit damp around the edges, and wandered to the 199 Steps up to the abbey ruins. Okay, full disclosure: I huffed and puffed more than the dog, pausing for a cheeky ice cream at the bottom to recover. Gentle self-reflection there – maybe those extra biscuits back home weren’t the best idea. But the view from the top? Magic. Whitby Abbey silhouetted against the moody sky, the town sprawling below like a postcard.

Evenings were bliss. We’d cook up a storm in that sociable space – fish pie one night, using fresh cod from the market – chatting about the day over a glass of wine. Mornings meant ambling to Pannett Park for the dog’s constitutional, then coffee at a café overlooking the lifeboat station. One mishap lingered comically: my attempt at frying Whitby scampi ended with smoke billowing and the extractor fan on full pelt, but we laughed it off, windows flung open to the sea air.

That slightly chaotic arrival set the tone, really – a reminder that holidays aren’t about perfection, but those shared daft moments. Whitby wrapped us up in its charm, from the pet-friendly paths along the cliffs to the harbour’s bustle. We left knackered but buzzing, already plotting a return. If you’re after a base that feels like an extension of the town’s adventures, this is it.
