About Whitby
I finally made it to Whitby after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from Leeds. Sat nav decided to have a midlife crisis just outside Scarborough, rerouting us down every narrow lane in North Yorkshire, and to top it off, I managed to spill half my coffee all over the passenger seat five minutes from the seafront. My other half, bless her, just laughed and said it was a sign we'd arrived properly – Yorkshire style, with a bit of mess.

By the time we pulled up, hearts racing and caffeine stains drying, the anticipation was buzzing. Whitby had been on our wishlist for ages, that perfect mix of Dracula vibes and fish and chips heaven. And there it was: our third-floor apartment in this cracking converted hotel, smack on the seafront. We grabbed our bags – dodging a seagull that swooped in like it owned the place – and headed up via the lift, which thankfully worked a treat despite my muttered prayers.

Stepping inside? Blimey, what a belter. The open-plan living space hit us first, all light and airy with those massive windows framing the harbour and the abbey ruins glowing in the distance. I stood there gobsmacked, coffee mishap forgotten, as waves crashed right below. The modern kitchen had a breakfast bar that screamed "sort your brekkie here while gawping at the sea," and the wrought iron dining table looked ready for lazy suppers. Three steps up to the sitting room, and you're in business – high ceilings giving that proper Victorian grandeur feel, like we've snuck into a posh era without the corsets.

First impressions? Outstanding. We dumped the bags and bolted straight out the door – beach access literally steps away, sand between toes before we'd even unpacked. Wandered down to the pier, grabbed chips from a proper old-school stall (vinegar dripping, mushy peas on the side), and watched the fishing boats chug in. The town's bustle was electric: swing bridge swinging, tat shops tempting with jet jewellery, and that endless salty air. Even managed a giggle when a gust whipped my hat into the harbour – retrieval mission aborted, lesson learned.

Sat on the balcony that evening with a brew, feet up, reflecting on how daft I'd been stressing the drive. Holidays like this remind you life's too short for perfect plans; it's the chaos that makes the good bits shine. Whitby's got that magic – atmospheric, unpretentious, and from our spot, arguably the best seat in town. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow, but honestly, this arrival sealed it. Proper home from home.
