About Whitby
I’ll never forget the drive up to Whitby – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Scarborough, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a narrow lane that looked more like a sheep track. We ended up reversing into a hedge, laughing our heads off as a farmer in wellies ambled over, chuckling, “You lot from down south, eh? Follow the coast road next time, love.” Classic Yorkshire welcome, and it set the tone for the whole trip.

By the time we pulled up, the clouds had parted, and there was this third-floor luxury apartment staring us down – all sleek and modern, right in the heart of Whitby with those jaw-dropping sea views across the seafront to Sandsend. I’d been buzzing with anticipation on the journey, picturing cosy evenings by the window, but stepping inside blew me away. The open-plan living space was a dream: glossy grey cupboards, a cracking oven and microwave for my amateur chef attempts, and a dining table perfect for four of us to clink glasses while watching the waves roll in. Sandy beach just a stone’s throw away – we were sorted.

What made it, though, were the characters we met. First off, there was Doris from the tuck shop round the corner – a proper Whitby treasure with a perm like a halo and stories for days. “Seen more shipwrecks than you’ve had hot dinners,” she winked, handing over fish and chips wrapped in yesterday’s Gazette. We got chatting about the old smuggling days, her gran’s tales of tunnels under the abbey cliffs. “Mind you don’t go poking about after dark,” she warned with a grin. I nearly choked on my mushy peas laughing – who knew history lessons could taste so good?

Then, on our beach strolls, we bumped into Madge and her Jack Russell, Percy. She’s lived here 50 years, reckons the sea air keeps her 92 and feisty. “Tourists come and go, but us locals keep the place ticking,” she said, eyes twinkling as Percy nipped at our heels. We ended up swapping tales over tea in her beach hut – hers about the time a seal washed up and the whole town turned out with buckets. Mine? Well, I confessed to being a city softie who’d forgotten how to walk on pebbles. “Practice makes perfect, duck,” she chuckled. Gentle nudge to my daft urban ways, that was.

Evenings back at the flat, we’d cook up a storm – pasta one night, my dodgy Yorkshire pud the next – toasting the views and those quirky chats. One night, we met Geoff the fisherman down at the harbour, gutting crab with hands like leather. “Best catch in years,” he boasted, slipping us a couple for free after hearing our Sandsend plans. “Tell the waves hello from me.” Proper salt-of-the-earth bloke, full of wind-lashed wisdom.

Looking back, it wasn’t just the luxury pad or the endless coast walks that stuck with me – it was those locals, turning a holiday into a proper yarn. Whitby’s got soul, and I’m already plotting a return. Who needs posh spas when you’ve got Doris, Madge, and Geoff?
