About Whitby
I’ll never forget the drive up to Whitby – a proper Yorkshire jaunt from the flatlands, winding along the A171 with the moors stretching out like a rumpled green blanket. We’d packed the car with wellies, waterproofs, and enough tea bags to last a siege, buzzing with that holiday anticipation where everything feels ripe for adventure. But about ten miles out, disaster struck: a sudden downpour turned the road into a skating rink, and I aquaplaned right into a puddle the size of the North Sea. Heart in mouth, we pulled over, laughing it off as the wipers battled valiantly. “Classic British getaway starter pack,” I quipped to my other half, secretly wondering if we’d make it in one piece.

By the time we rolled into town, the rain had eased to a cheeky drizzle, and Whitby welcomed us with those first impressions that hit you like a warm scone. We parked in the nearby public car park – easy enough, if a tad pricey – and climbed the external steps to this stylish two-bedroom apartment smack in the heart of it all. Stepping inside, it was love at first sight: open-plan living space that just wrapped you up, with a kitchen begging for a brew, a breakfast bar for plotting the day’s walks, and a sitting area where we cracked open a bottle of wine by the woodburning stove that evening. Central yet cosy, right by the beach and all the local spots – perfect for us lot, whether family or mates.

First morning, the sun cracked through like it meant business, so we laced up and headed straight for the East Cliff – that bracing hike up the 199 Steps (yes, I counted every one, puffing like a steam train). The views over the harbour and abbey ruins were pure magic, Whitby Abbey looming dramatic against the sky. We wandered the cliff tops, salt wind whipping our faces, spotting seals bobbing in the waves below. Felt alive, you know? That gentle self-reflection kicked in midway: here I was, mid-forties, still chasing horizons instead of scrolling on the sofa. Not bad, eh?

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. By lunch, skies blackened, and we were caught in a biblical hailstorm scrambling down to the beach. Plans for a long coastal path amble to Sandsend? Scrubbed. Instead, we dashed into a chippy on the harbour, devouring haddock and mushy peas under the awning, rain lashing the windows. Laughed till we cried about my sodden socks squelching like wet sponges. Afternoon brought a sneaky clearance, so we tried the West Cliff promenade – gentler strolls along the bay, dodging rock pools and ice cream vans, the sea crashing like it was auditioning for a drama.

Next day, more weather roulette: misty start for a yomp over to the swing bridge and up towards Boulby Cliffs (kept it local, mind), but gales forced an early pivot back to town. We holed up in the apartment, stove roaring, plotting tomorrow’s revenge hike. That’s Whitby for you – walks that thrill, weather that humbles, and a base that keeps you coming back grinning. Can’t wait for round two.
