About Whitby
The terrace itself sits just back from the West Cliff, so the sea air hit us the moment we opened the doors. Our landlady had left the key in one of those fake-stone hidey-holes by the doorstep; naturally I spent a full minute trying to lift the wrong rock before spotting the real one two feet away. Inside, the little hallway smelled faintly of toast and sea salt, and the stairs creaked in that reassuring, lived-in way that holiday cottages always seem to manage. We dumped our bags in the front bedroom—where the sash window looked straight out over chimney pots towards the harbour—and immediately made for the kitchen to put the kettle on. From the back window we could just catch a sliver of beach between the houses, the tide already turning and leaving dark ribbons of wet sand. It felt suddenly, wonderfully close. We’d planned to unpack straight away, but the view won; within minutes we were out again, shoes kicked off at the door, wandering the short slope down to the promenade. The air was sharp enough to wake us up properly, and the gulls wheeled overhead as if they owned the place. Back at the cottage the sitting-room sofa proved deep enough to sink into completely, and I found myself staring at the framed prints of old Whitby lifeboats while the kettle finally boiled. It’s funny how a long drive can make you forget why you came in the first place. Standing there with a mug of tea, watching the light shift on the water through the open window, I realised I’d been so busy navigating one-way systems and dodgy lanes that I’d almost missed the simple fact we’d actually arrived. The cottage felt instantly like ours for the week—no grand gestures, just a kettle, a view, and the faint sound of waves carrying up from the shore. Sometimes the best part of a holiday is remembering to stop rushing once you’ve finally stopped moving. |
