  • Whitby Abbey

Perched on Whitby’s East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea are the remains of Gothic Whitby Abbey. The first monastery on the site was founded in 657, which became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world. To get to the Abbey you can count the 199 steps to the top of the headland from the town.

About Whitby
We’d barely made it through Whitby’s narrow streets before the sat-nav decided we were better off in the harbour. One wrong turn past the fish and chip shops and we were suddenly staring at the abbey steps from the wrong side of town, the car boot wedged against a low stone wall while a queue of day-trippers watched us reverse like a three-point-turn tutorial. By the time we found Abbey View, a neat little cottage tucked just off the road to Sandsend, the sun was already high and the mishap felt like ancient history.

The front door opened straight onto a bright kitchen that smelled faintly of coffee someone had left behind. We dumped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and stepped straight out again because the beach was literally across the lane. The tide was out, the sand warm under bare feet, and the only plan was to have none at all. We spread an old blanket near the dunes, cracked open the paperbacks we’d both brought “just in case,” and let the hours slide by between paragraphs and the occasional glance at the waves.

Lunch turned out to be whatever we could carry back from the cottage in one trip: slightly squashed sandwiches and a shared packet of crisps that kept blowing away in the breeze. We ate them anyway, laughing when the gulls got too interested, then settled back down with no urge to move. The sun had that soft, early-summer warmth that makes you forget about phones and to-do lists, and for once neither of us felt guilty about ignoring them.

Later we wandered a few hundred metres along the sand towards Whitby’s West Beach, toes in the shallows, stopping whenever a shell or a bit of driftwood caught our eye. Back at the cottage the little garden caught the afternoon light perfectly, so we dragged two folding chairs outside and read until the pages grew too bright to focus on. Every so often one of us would murmur something about “maybe popping into town later,” but neither of us made it past the gate.

By evening the light had turned that particular golden colour you only seem to get by the sea. We stayed put, sharing a bottle of wine on the patio while the gulls wheeled overhead and the sound of distant chatter drifted up from the beach path. It struck me, somewhere between the second glass and the third chapter, how rarely we actually let a day unfold without trying to improve it. Here, with nothing more pressing than whether to fetch another blanket, the answer felt simple: sometimes the best thing you can do is exactly nothing at all, and let the sea and the sunshine do the rest.
