About Whitby
Destiny Rose sits just back from the West Cliff, tucked into a quiet terrace that still catches the sea air. The key was waiting in one of those little lock-boxes by the blue door, and after a brief wrestle with the stiff latch we stepped straight into a low-ceilinged living room that smelled of fresh linen and faintly of woodsmoke. From the window you could see the pale strip of beach below and the curve of the harbour wall; the tide was out, leaving wet sand that glinted like metal under the late sun. We dumped the bags, still slightly sticky from the coffee incident, and wandered straight back out to stretch our legs. The short path down to the beach was steeper than it looked on the photos, and halfway down I realised I’d left the cottage keys on the kitchen table. We trudged back up, laughing at ourselves, then down again, shoes filling with sand almost immediately. The air tasted of salt and vinegar from a nearby chippy, and a few hardy souls were already walking their dogs along the water’s edge. Back at Destiny Rose the kettle whistled quickly on the little electric hob, and we carried our mugs onto the tiny patio. From there the view stretched across the bay towards the stone breakwater and the faint outline of fishing boats heading out. It felt oddly peaceful after the motorway slog; even the gulls wheeling overhead seemed to be taking their time. I found myself thinking how rarely we actually stop and notice the shift from road noise to the hush of a coastal evening, and how a spilled coffee and a forgotten key had somehow made the arrival feel more like ours. Later, with the windows cracked to let in the breeze, we unpacked just enough for the night and left the rest for morning. The cottage was warm without being stuffy, the bed already turned down, and outside the streetlamps were beginning to glow against the darkening sea. It wasn’t dramatic or showy, just quietly ready for whatever the next few days might bring. |
