About Whitby
The cottage itself looked exactly like the photos—solid stone walls, a neat little garden, and that unmistakable smell of salt and woodsmoke drifting in from the beach below. We dumped our bags, made a quick cuppa, and decided the first job was to stretch our legs along the Cleveland Way. The sun was out, the tide was low, and the cliffs glowed honey-coloured in the late light. We wandered south towards Saltwick Bay, boots crunching on the path, stopping every few minutes to watch fulmars wheel above the waves. By the time we reached the little wooden steps down to the beach, clouds had started to gather like uninvited guests. Next morning the forecast had turned, so instead of the longer hike we’d planned we stuck closer to town. We followed the harbour wall out to the East Pier, then climbed the famous 199 steps to the abbey ruins. The wind picked up halfway, sending ice-cream wrappers tumbling, but the view from the top was worth the hair-whipping. We took shelter in the little café at the top, nursing flat whites while rain spotted the windows, and watched the fishing boats bob about like toys. By afternoon the showers had eased, so we nipped back down and followed the lower coastal path towards Sandsend, stopping to skim stones whenever the sun broke through. The light kept changing—bright one minute, moody the next—so we never quite knew whether to peel off layers or zip them back on. That evening we cooked in the little kitchen at The Old Guard House, windows open to the sound of waves, and realised how quickly plans had shifted. We’d meant to do the full coastal stretch to Staithes, yet the weather had kept us nearer, and somehow that felt better. The mishap with the mirror already seemed funny rather than annoying, a reminder that the best bits of a Whitby break often happen when you let the cliffs and the clouds decide. |
