About Whitby
I finally made it to Whitby after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from York. Sat nav decided to have a midlife crisis just as we hit the moors, rerouting us down some narrow lane that had me white-knuckling the wheel while my mate Dave shouted directions from a crumpled map. We ended up in a dead-end farm track, surrounded by sheep giving us evils, and I swear one of them photobombed my panicked selfie. Classic me – always turning a straightforward journey into an episode of Top Gear gone wrong. But honestly, that little mishap just ramped up the anticipation; by the time we spotted the twinkling lights of Whitby below, I was buzzing like a kid at Christmas.

Pulling up to the holiday cottage – a cosy little terraced number right in the heart of town, all classic seaside charm with its pitched roof and welcoming glow – I let out a massive sigh of relief. First impressions? Spot on. The key turned smoothly in the lock (unlike my car keys earlier, which I'd dropped into a puddle), and stepping inside was like being hugged by a warm pasty. It was one of those properly lived-in spots, perfect for a lads' getaway, with a compact kitchen that screamed "cook up a full English" and a lounge begging for a Netflix binge after a day out.

We dumped the bags and cracked open a couple of tins, toasting our survival. Peeking out the window, the view down to the harbour was magic – boats bobbing gently, the swing bridge lit up like something from a postcard. Hunger hit hard after the drive, so we wandered five minutes down the hill to a chippy that smelled like heaven. Proper Whitby scampi and chips, wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench overlooking the sea. The salt air mixed with vinegar tang was pure bliss, and we laughed about the sheep incident till our sides hurt. No fancy restaurants for us; this was proper holiday grub.

Next morning, the chaos of arrival felt like a distant memory. We strolled to the beach – just a hop away – dodging the early dog-walkers and builders heading to the pier. The sand was crisp underfoot, and with the abbey ruins looming on the cliff like a gothic guardian, it was hard not to feel a bit reflective. I've done my share of city breaks, rushing about, but here? Sitting on the pebbles with a brew from a beach hut, watching the waves, I realised I needed this slowdown more than I thought. Whitby has that knack – chaotic arrival or not, it wraps you up and sorts you out.

Wandered up to the 199 Steps later (Dave made it halfway before faking a calf strain for a breather), and the views from the top were worth every huff. Back at the cottage by tea time, we fired up the hob for a curry rummage, feet up, utterly content. If you're after that authentic Whitby vibe without the hassle, this kind of stay nails it. Can't wait to go back – minus the sat nav drama, hopefully.
