About Whitby
I’ll never forget the drive up to Whitby – or rather, the bit just before we arrived. We’d piled into the car from Leeds, me navigating with my trusty phone while my other half drove, both of us buzzing with that holiday anticipation. The North York Moors were stunning, all rolling heather and sheep-dotted hills, but then disaster struck: a rogue pothole just outside the town sent us veering into a muddy layby. Cue 20 minutes of frantic tyre-checking and me laughing hysterically as mud splattered my new trainers. “Welcome to Yorkshire,” he grumbled, but by then we were proper excited, windows down, inhaling that salty sea air.

Pulling up to the place felt like stepping into a dream. It’s this beautifully restored old guard house, turned into a posh 5-bedroom holiday home over the last couple of years. The whole vibe screams 1940s nostalgia – think traditional wallpaper, vintage furniture, and walls lined with those quirky WWII propaganda posters urging you to “Dig for Victory” or keep calm. We were only a couple, so it was pure luxury having all that space to ourselves, like our own private time capsule. The west-facing upper balcony was the star, though – we cracked open a bottle of wine that first evening and just sat there, feet up, gazing over the farmland rolling down to those gorgeous coastal bays. Pure magic.

First impressions? Spot on. The extension they’d added blends seamlessly, housing this massive kitchen-living area built for lounging. Plump sofas, a telly bigger than our lounge at home, and a kitchen stocked with everything you’d need for lazy brekkies. We wasted no time: bacon sarnies on the balcony at dawn, watching the mist lift off the sea. Whitby’s only 5.7 miles away, so we pottered down most days – nothing rushed, mind. Strolled the harbour, snaffled fish and chips from a proper old-school chippie, still steaming in paper as we wandered the beach. One afternoon, we hit the 199 Steps up to the abbey ruins – I huffed and puffed like an old steam train, pausing every ten steps for a “scenic view” (read: catch my breath). He teased me mercilessly, but those panoramic sweeps over the town and cliffs? Worth every gasp.

Evenings were all about that cottage life chaos we love. Cooking up a storm in the massive kitchen – I burned the first night’s shepherd’s pie, filling the place with smoke while those propaganda posters seemed to judge us silently. “Is Your Journey Really Necessary?” one cheekily asked as we fanned the alarms. We laughed it off with board games on the rug, feet tangled under a blanket, or just chilling on the balcony as the sun dipped behind the moors. No kids, no schedules – just us, rediscovering that easy rhythm we’d lost in the daily grind.

It got me reflecting one quiet morning, nursing a cuppa on the balcony. Life’s mad rush had us knackered, hadn’t it? Here, amid the gentle chaos of seagull cries and distant waves, we remembered what matters: simple stuff like shared giggles over mishaps, proper chats till late, and sunsets that make your heart swell. We didn’t need grand adventures; this spot nailed the relaxed family-couple break we craved. Already plotting our return – potholes and all.
