About York
I finally made it to that cute little period cottage in Copmanthorpe after a bit of a faff on the journey down from Leeds. I'd been buzzing with anticipation all morning—visions of York Minster and the Shambles dancing in my head—but then the sat-nav decided to have a hissy fit just outside the city, sending me on a merry dance through some back lanes that looked like they'd last seen a car in the 1970s. Fifteen minutes of mild panic later, I pulled up outside this quirky gem, and blimey, it was love at first sight. Nestled in this delightful village just a short hop from York—3.6 miles, if you're counting—it felt like the perfect hideaway, all cosy and inviting with its unique charm that just screams "relax here, you daft sod."

From the off, I knew this was going to be about doing bugger all, and I wasn't wrong. After unloading my bags (which mainly consisted of books, snacks, and a bottle of decent red), I flopped straight into the garden. It's a proper suntrap, that garden—lush and private, with birdsong for a soundtrack and not a whiff of urgency in the air. I spent the first afternoon just lounging on a deckchair, nose in a battered copy of Middlemarch, occasionally glancing up to watch the clouds do their lazy shuffle across the sky. Who needs the hustle of York when you've got this? The village itself is a dream for the idle soul: a cracking café a stone's throw away for a flat white, the local pub for a pint if the mood strikes, and even a little Indian spot and supermarket within 150 metres. But honestly? I barely stirred.

The joy of those lazy cottage days was pure bliss. Mornings blurred into reading sessions with tea that went cold because I forgot about it, followed by gentle wanders around the garden, picking at strawberries from a hidden bush or just staring at the bees buzzing about. One evening, I managed a slow amble to the pub—cheers to the friendly locals who didn't bat an eyelid at my dishevelled holiday hair—and grabbed a fish pie that hit the spot without any effort. Back home, I lit the fire (it's got that perfect nook for it) and lost myself in another chapter, the world outside fading to a soft hum. No grand plans, no ticking off tourist boxes; just the sheer luxury of slowing right down.

It got me reflecting, mid-sip of wine on day three, on how we pack our lives with rushing about. Here, in this quirky haven, I realised doing very little is the real treat—recharging the batteries amid the gentle rhythm of village life, with York’s medieval magic (Shambles Market, Jorvik Viking Centre, the Minster) and even the York Designer Outlet just 2.2 miles away if I fancied a whim. But nah, the garden won every time. If you're after a stay that whispers "stay put and savour," this is it. I left feeling lighter, already plotting a return to my do-nothing paradise.
