About York
Me and the missus had been counting down the days to our little getaway in York, dreaming of cosy evenings and proper Yorkshire charm without the kids for once—just us two, rediscovering that spark amid the city's historic buzz. The train journey up from London was meant to be straightforward, but wouldn't you know it, I spilt my entire flask of tea right across my lap about halfway through—classic me, always turning a smooth ride into a soggy disaster. By the time we pulled into York station, I was damp, grumpy, and reeking faintly of Earl Grey, but the anticipation of ditching the daily grind had us grinning like idiots anyway.

A quick ten-minute stroll from the station landed us at this cracking three-storey terraced house smack in the heart of York, just a few minutes' walk from the city centre. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. We pushed open the door to this immaculately-presented gem with contemporary styling that felt like a warm hug—spacious living/dining room with plush leather sofas and a comfy armchair begging us to flop down. That stunning bay window framed the bustling street outside perfectly, letting in floods of light while we flicked on the telly to catch up on a bit of Corrie. It was the ideal spot for a family couple like us, though with the bairns at home with nan, it was pure bliss having it to ourselves.

We wasted no time settling in, brewing a proper cuppa and unpacking our bits before wandering out to the Shambles—that wonky medieval street with its timbered shops overflowing with fudge and quirky souvenirs. We grabbed some from a chocolatier there, giggling as I tried (and failed) to haggle like a local. Evenings were all about simple pleasures: firing up the kitchen for a lazy pasta dinner, wine in hand, then curling up on those sofas with a Netflix binge, the kind of chaos-free nights we never get at home. One morning, we ambled over to York Minster, jaws dropping at its sheer grandeur, sipping flat whites from a nearby café while people-watching. The Jorvik Viking Centre was next—cheeky fun, smelling a bit whiffy but cracking for a laugh, imagining us as marauding Vikings on holiday.

Of course, there was the odd cottage-life hiccup, like when the missus realised I'd forgotten the fancy olive oil and we ended up with a hilariously smoky pan-fried attempt at scampi. Sat there chuckling over it, I had a proper moment of reflection—life's mad rush back home makes you forget these little joys, doesn't it? Just being together, no schedules, no squabbles over the remote. We even nipped to Rowntree Park for a gentle mooch, kicking a footy about like daft kids ourselves, before heading back for more sofa lounging.

A stone's throw from a 24-hour car park if we'd driven, this place made exploring dead easy—Clifford's Tower for sunset views, a potter round the city walls, and endless cream teas. It was relaxed perfection, the sort of break that reminds you why York's got that timeless pull. Can't wait to go back, tea stains and all.
