About York
I’ll never forget the drive up to that holiday spot just outside York – what was meant to be a smooth motorway cruise turned into a right old faff when we hit roadworks on the A64. There we were, me at the wheel, the missus navigating with her phone glued to her hand, and the kids in the back bickering over who got the last Haribo. Just as we neared Copmanthorpe, about a mile and a half from the village, I took a wrong turn down a narrow farm lane, convinced it was a shortcut. Big mistake. We ended up dodging a tractor that loomed out of nowhere, its driver giving me a wave that was half-friendly, half-'get off my land'. Heart in my mouth, I reversed like a pro (or so I told myself), splattering mud up the sides of the car. The kids thought it was hilarious; I was just praying we hadn’t scratched the hire car.

By the time we pulled up at the farmhouse, I was frazzled, but honestly, that chaotic arrival made the first glimpse all the sweeter. Nestled on a proper working farm on the edge of Copmanthorpe village, it looked like a proper treat – warm lights glowing from the windows against the dusky Yorkshire sky. We’d been buzzing with anticipation all week, imagining cosy evenings after York adventures, and stepping inside didn’t disappoint. It’s one of those renovated farmhouses done to a really high standard, all contemporary furnishings that somehow still feel dead welcoming, like the place was just waiting for us.

We tumbled through the door into this brilliant open-plan kitchen/diner – grey units, sleek white worktops, and enough space to swing a cat (not that I’d try). I could already picture rustling up a Sunday roast there, though after the drive, it was straight to the fridge for a cold beer. The large dining area screamed family gatherings, perfect for a homemade lasagne and a cheeky glass of wine while swapping stories. And then, just off that, a snug little spot for some peace – complete with an Xbox, which had the boys grinning like Cheshire cats before we’d even unpacked.

That first evening, we barely ventured out. Popped down to the village shop in Copmanthorpe for essentials – it’s only a quick hop away – and grabbed some local sausages and veg that looked farm-fresh. Back at the house, we cooked up a storm, the kitchen kitted out with every gadget going. Sat round the table, mud still drying on our shoes, laughing about my navigational disaster. It got me thinking, doesn’t it? We rush about life, stressing the small stuff like a daft wrong turn, but moments like this – arriving somewhere that feels like a hug after the madness – remind you what matters. Great first impressions, they stick.

Next morning, we wandered the farm paths, spotting sheep and chickens going about their business, before heading into York centre, just a short drive. York Minster loomed on the horizon, the Shambles buzzing with tourists, but coming back to our peaceful pad each night was the real highlight. That messy arrival? Best mishap ever – set the tone for a holiday full of proper laughs and proper relaxation. If you’re after a base near York that’s got that farm charm with all the mod cons, this is it. We’re already plotting a return.
