About York
Pulling up, I was chuffed to bits with the first impressions. It's one of those classic stone farmhouses, all cosy and characterful, tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside the city centre. The garden stretched out like a welcoming hug, wildflowers nodding in the breeze and a couple of weathered benches begging for a sit-down. I dumped my bags, cracked open a cuppa, and thought, yeah, this is exactly what I needed. The joy of the whole trip was doing sod all, and I mean that in the best possible way. No grand plans, no ticking off tourist boxes – York's minster and Shambles are only a short hop away if you fancy, but I barely stirred beyond the garden gate. Mornings started slow: I'd brew tea in the sunlit kitchen, grab a book from the shelf (they had a cracking selection of dog-eared thrillers), and flop into one of those garden chairs with a view over the rolling fields. The air smelled of fresh-cut grass and distant rain, perfect for losing yourself in a story while the world pottered on without you. Afternoons blurred into dozy heaven. I'd wander the garden paths, picking a few herbs for a lazy lunch – nothing fancy, just cheese on toast with home-grown chives – then back to reading under the shade of an old apple tree. One day, I even nodded off mid-chapter, waking up to birdsong and a face full of pollen. Proper bliss. Evenings meant firing up the barbecue (it was surprisingly easy to use), grilling some local sausages from the nearby farm shop, and watching the sunset paint the sky pink over the hedges. No telly, no scrolling – just the rustle of leaves and the odd sheep bleating in the distance. There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one evening, glass of wine in hand, staring at the stars popping out. I'd been rushing about at home, always chasing the next thing, but here? Time stretched out like the garden itself. It hit me that slowing down isn't lazy; it's bloody essential. Made me promise myself to carve out more of these pauses back in real life. By the time I packed up, I felt recharged, lighter somehow. If you're after a York getaway that's more about unwinding than sightseeing, this is the ticket. Those lazy cottage days in the garden, book in lap, were pure magic. Can't wait to go back. |
