One of York's most famous landmarks, the Shambles is one of England's best-preserved medieval shopping streets. Believed to inspire Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. Plenty of curiosities, dog-friendly pubs and accommodation.

About York
I finally made it to York after what felt like the world's most faffing-about journey. I'd set off from Leeds bright and early, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation—you know, visions of cosy evenings by the fire and wandering those ancient streets without a care. But no, the M62 decided to throw a spanner in the works with roadworks that turned a 45-minute drive into a two-hour crawl. Then, just as I neared the city, my sat-nav lost its marbles, directing me down a one-way street the wrong way. Heart in mouth, I did a swift three-point turn in front of a bemused local in a battered Land Rover, who gave me a thumbs-up that said, "Welcome to York, you daft southerner." By the time I pulled up to the holiday cottage, I was knackered, parched, and questioning my life choices.

Still, the first impressions? Absolute gold. Tucked away in a quiet spot just outside the bustling heart of York—close enough to stroll into the city centre without the hassle of parking in that nightmare—the place was a proper gem. It's one of those converted barn-style cottages, all warm and inviting with a rustic charm that screams "relax here." I fumbled with the key safe (note to self: read instructions properly next time), and as the door swung open, that mishap-induced grumpiness evaporated. The living area opened up straight away, light flooding in from big windows overlooking a neat garden, and the scent of fresh linen hit me like a hug. Dropped my bags, cracked open a cheeky bottle of local ale I'd picked up en route, and flopped onto the squishy sofa. Bliss.

We wasted no time diving into the good stuff. A quick freshen-up, and we were off on foot to York, that anticipation from the car turning into pure glee as the minster's spires peeked into view. First stop: a wander along the city walls, those sturdy old ramparts giving killer views over the rooftops. I couldn't help but chuckle at myself—me, who once got lost in my own postcode, now striding confidently like a local. Lunch was fish and chips from a no-frills spot near Lendal Bridge, vinegar dripping everywhere because, let's face it, that's how you do it right. Greasy perfection.

Afternoon meant the Shambles, that wonky street of timbered shops selling everything from fudge to Harry Potter tat (York's got that magical vibe nailed). I picked up a silly York ghost tour badge for a laugh, reflecting on how these little holidays remind me to slow down—life's too short for sat-nav tantrums. Back at the cottage by dusk, we lit the fire (matches worked first go, hurrah), rustled up pasta in the well-kitted kitchen, and played board games till late. The garden was calling too—a peaceful spot for morning coffee the next day, birds chirping away.

That arrival chaos? Best icebreaker ever. Turned a stressful drive into the perfect setup for unwinding in this cracking little haven. York's magic, the cottage's comfort—already plotting a return. If you're after a base that's handy for the Minster, Jorvik Viking Centre, or just riverside pints along the Ouse, this is your spot. Proper treat.
